Tehran Set to Host 25th International Congress on Cutting-Edge Cardiovascular Updates!

The upcoming 25th International Congress on Cardiovascular Updates (ICCU) is set to take place in Tehran from September 23 to 26. This significant event, hosted by the Iranian Society of Atherosclerosis, aims to enhance the understanding of cardiovascular diseases among medical professionals globally. The congress will feature a diverse lineup of experts from various countries, including Australia, the U.S., England, Oman, Turkey, France, and Germany, who will participate both in person and online, according to IRIB reports.

The ICCU will cover an impressive range of topics, featuring:

  • 343 distinct topics
  • 80 specialized panels
  • 290 scientific presentations

The primary objective of this congress is to provide the latest updates in the scientific knowledge of cardiologists and other specialists in the cardiovascular field. Additionally, it will highlight current achievements and advancements in drugs and medical equipment.

Masoud Qasemi, the head of the Congress, shared alarming statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO). Over the past 35 years, the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Iran has surged by 180 percent. However, there is a silver lining: the prevalence and incidence rates of these diseases have decreased by 30 percent, and mortality rates have fallen by 40 percent. Furthermore, the disability-adjusted life years have dropped by an impressive 45 percent.

Notably, the average age for a first heart attack in Iran is just 32 years, which is a full decade younger than the global average. Qasemi also highlighted several therapeutic advances made in the country, including:

  • Augmented vector left (aVL) technology
  • Diamond-plated drill for treating vascular occlusion

The congress will also delve into emerging therapies for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, providing a platform for sharing innovative ideas and practices.

Understanding Cardiovascular Diseases

Globally, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death, accounting for approximately 17.9 million deaths annually. In 2022 alone, an estimated 19.8 million deaths were attributed to CVDs, making up around 32 percent of all global mortalities. Among these, 85 percent resulted from heart attacks and strokes.

CVDs encompass a variety of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels, including:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Rheumatic heart disease
  • Other related conditions

It is crucial to note that over three-quarters of CVD-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. However, many cardiovascular diseases can be effectively prevented by addressing behavioral and environmental risk factors, such as:

  • Tobacco use
  • Unhealthy diet (including excess salt, sugar, and fats)
  • Obesity
  • Physical inactivity
  • Harmful use of alcohol
  • Air pollution

Early detection of cardiovascular diseases is vital for effective management through counseling and medication. In Iran, heart attacks specifically account for 40 percent of annual deaths. Other significant risk factors for non-communicable diseases include car accidents, diabetes, and cancers, as stated by Kourosh Etemad, a health ministry official.

Risk Factors and Preventive Measures

Four major risk factors contribute to cardiovascular diseases:

  • High blood pressure
  • Low physical activity
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption

Individuals aged 30 and above are encouraged to visit health centers for screenings related to high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Based on their age, family history, and weight, a tailored care plan will be developed over three months, six months, and one year. This proactive approach aims to detect cardiovascular diseases early and manage associated risk factors effectively.

Unfortunately, in Iran, as in many other parts of the world, a significant portion of the population remains unaware of their high blood pressure condition. Only 50 percent of individuals diagnosed with high blood pressure adhere to their prescribed medication. This highlights the need for enhanced public awareness regarding the disease and necessary treatment recommendations.

The ICCU represents a vital opportunity for professionals in the field to converge, share knowledge, and work towards improving cardiovascular health outcomes globally. The advancements presented during this congress may pave the way for innovative treatments and preventive measures that can save lives and enhance overall health.
