Tehran and Moscow Strengthen Ties: Enhancing Counter-Narcotics Cooperation

Iran and Russia are collaborating to strengthen their joint efforts in combating drug trafficking. In a recent meeting held in Tehran, officials from both countries discussed significant strategies to tackle the pressing issue of drug-related crimes. The discussions centered around:

• Enhancing practical cooperation among Caspian coastal states to suppress maritime drug trafficking.

UNODC Acknowledges Iran’s Commitment

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has commended Iran for its unwavering commitment to tackling drug trafficking challenges. On December 8, 2024, Alexander Fedulov, the UNODC Iran Country Representative, attended a high-level meeting at the DCHQ, celebrating the successful seizure of 2,400 kilograms of methamphetamine in Sistan–Baluchestan Province.

Brigadier General Ahmad Ali Goudarzi, commander of the Iranian Border Guard, detailed the significant drug bust that took place on September 10, where Iranian forces intercepted 2,400 kilograms of methamphetamine. This operation underscored the relentless dedication of Iran’s border forces, who are actively engaged in combatting drug production and trafficking, particularly from Afghanistan.

Brigadier General Goudarzi highlighted that this seizure not only illustrates the escalating challenges posed by methamphetamine production in the region but also showcases the commitment of Iran’s border guards, law enforcement, and customs officials. He stated:

Support from UNODC for Iranian Anti-Narcotics Police

To further enhance the operational capabilities of the Iranian Anti-Narcotics Police, the UNODC has provided two essential medical devices: a portable Doppler sonography and a veterinary anesthesia machine. These tools are intended to support drug supply reduction initiatives in Iran.

In line with these efforts, an event was organized at the DCHQ in Tehran, attended by representatives from the UNODC Iran, DCHQ, and the Iranian Anti-Narcotics Police (ANP).
