Staggering Statistics: Parkinson’s Disease Rates in Iran Soar 40% Above Global Average, Warns Expert

Parkinson’s disease is a serious neurodegenerative condition that is affecting an increasing number of individuals worldwide. In Iran, the incidence of Parkinson’s disease is reported to be an alarming 40% higher than the global average, according to the vice president of Iran’s Parkinson’s Association. This significant statistic highlights the urgent need for awareness and support for those living with this challenging condition.

Parkinson’s disease ranks as the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease, and it is characterized by several debilitating symptoms including:

  • Muscle stiffness
  • Slow movements
  • Trouble with balance

Despite ongoing research, there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease. Existing treatments focus primarily on alleviating the movement symptoms associated with the disease. As Mohsen Mir-Mohammadi stated in an interview with IRNA, “The treatments help reduce the movement symptoms.”

April 11 marks World Parkinson’s Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, fostering resilience, and providing hope to individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease. This global event serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those living with this condition.

The incidence of Parkinson’s disease is on the rise in Iran, with estimates suggesting that over 250,000 individuals are currently living with the disease. While the exact cause of Parkinson’s disease remains unknown, certain factors have been identified as increasing the risk:

  • Family history of the disease
  • Stress levels
  • Excessive use of agricultural pesticides
  • Parasites

A significant contributing factor to the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease is the loss of neurons that produce dopamine, a crucial chemical messenger in the brain. The decrease in dopamine leads to irregular brain activity, resulting in various movement problems.

Mir-Mohammadi also addressed the numerous challenges faced by patients with Parkinson’s disease, including:

  • Lack of access to quality medication
  • Insufficient insurance coverage for treatments

“The treatment costs including medication, speech therapy, and proper nutrition, reach more than 300 million rials (approximately $300) per month, which most people cannot afford,” he explained. This financial burden adds an extra layer of difficulty for those battling the disease.

In response to these challenges, the Parkinson’s Association is planning to open a specialized clinic dedicated to patients with movement disorders in Tehran. Mir-Mohammadi encouraged various stakeholders, including ministries, government institutions, municipalities, and other organizations, to collaborate with the foundation to help identify individuals with Parkinson’s disease and improve their living conditions.

The impact of Parkinson’s disease extends beyond physical symptoms, as it often leads to high rates of disability and an increased need for care. Additionally, many patients may develop dementia as the disease progresses. While Parkinson’s is commonly associated with older adults, it can also affect younger individuals. Notably, men are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease more frequently than women.
