Iraq’s Kurdistan Region Pledges Safety and Stability for Iran, Says Barzani

In a significant statement regarding regional stability, the President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, emphasized that the semi-autonomous territory has never posed a threat to Iran and will continue to prioritize peaceful relations. This declaration was made during the 4th Tehran Dialogue Forum (TDF), which showcases the importance of diplomatic discussions among nations.

During his address at the event, held at the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Barzani highlighted several key points:

  • Iran’s Early Action Against Terrorism: Barzani acknowledged that Iran was the first nation to take decisive measures against the Daesh terrorist group in Iraq.
  • Commitment to Neighborly Relations: “One of our key policies is not to allow the Kurdistan Region to become a base for threatening our neighbors, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he stated.
  • Expansion of Bilateral Relations: Following Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Erbil, Barzani noted that there has been significant growth in bilateral relations across various sectors.
  • Upcoming Meetings: An expert-level meeting is set to occur soon in Sanandaj, which is a province in Iran’s Kurdistan region.

Barzani arrived in Tehran on Saturday evening to participate in the diplomatic forum hosted by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, which is attended by around 200 delegations, including senior officials from 53 countries.

Additionally, it is worth mentioning that Iran and Iraq finalized a security agreement in March 2023 in Baghdad, aimed at enhancing the security of their shared border. A critical component of this agreement involves the disarmament and relocation of anti-Iran terrorist groups operating within the Kurdistan Region.

This dialogue reflects a shared commitment to regional stability and cooperation, fostering a future of peace and mutual respect.
