Iran Asserts Right to Peaceful Nuclear Energy Use, Including Enrichment

In a significant statement regarding nuclear policy, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran has unequivocally declared the acquisition and use of nuclear weapons as forbidden. As a committed member of the international non-proliferation regime, Iran insists on its right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including enrichment.

During the 4th round of the Iran and Arab World Conference held in Doha, Qatar, on May 10, 2025, Araqchi articulated Iran’s stance on nuclear weapons:

  • No Pursuit of Nuclear Weapons: “We are not seeking nuclear weapons, and weapons of mass destruction have no place in Iran’s security doctrine.”
  • Initiative for a Nuclear-Free Zone: “That is why we were among the initiators of creating a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the West Asian region.”
  • Call for Consistency: “It is necessary for Western countries and all those who claim to oppose nuclear weapons to refrain from double standards.”
  • Dialogue Continuation: “We continue our dialogues with the US government, and of course, simultaneously with Europe, Russia, and China, in good faith.”

Araqchi’s remarks highlight the contrast between Iran’s commitment to peaceful nuclear energy and the perceived hypocrisy of Western nations regarding nuclear armament in the region. His statements are a crucial part of ongoing discussions about nuclear policy and international relations.
