In an important development in regional relations, Iran and Afghanistan have successfully conducted a prisoner exchange at the Milak border crossing. This significant event reflects ongoing efforts to improve diplomatic ties and address humanitarian concerns.

Nearly 200 Afghan detainees, who were previously incarcerated in Iranian prisons located in Tehran, Sistan-and-Baluchestan, and Isfahan provinces, were handed over to Afghan authorities at the Milak border in northern Sistan-and-Baluchestan. At the same time, two Iranian citizens serving sentences in Afghan prisons were repatriated to Iran.

The exchange was facilitated by officials from both countries’ judicial and law enforcement agencies, highlighting collaborative efforts in the region. This move is seen as a step towards strengthening cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan.

According to Askar Jalalian, Iran’s Deputy Justice Minister for Human Rights and International Affairs, over 4,500 foreign nationals detained in Iran have been sent back to their home countries. This demonstrates Iran’s commitment to addressing the situation of foreign detainees and fostering better international relations.

  • Involved Authorities: Judicial and law enforcement officials from both countries
