FM Champions Vision to Transform Makran into Iran’s Future Economic Powerhouse

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has emphasized that the “Lost Paradise” of Makran should evolve into a vital economic hub for Iran and the broader region. His remarks were made during the 8th Indian Ocean Conference currently taking place in Muscat, Oman, where he articulated Iran’s commitment to a maritime-oriented policy as a cornerstone of its strategic development.

With a coastline exceeding 5,800 kilometers, including 4,900 kilometers along the Indian Ocean, Araghchi remarked, “A country with such extensive coastal resources cannot afford to be indifferent to its future.” He stressed that fostering a maritime-based economy is not merely an option for Iran but an essential requirement.

1. Historical Context: Araghchi highlighted Oman’s role as a bridge between East and West, facilitating economic interactions and constructive dialogue in the Indian Ocean region.

• Strengthening Local Economies: Supporting small and medium-sized industries and creating sustainable employment opportunities for local communities.
• Renewable Energy Development: Investing in sustainable energy infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of clean energy for future economic competitiveness.
• Transportation Network Expansion: Completing international transit corridors and enhancing rail, road, and maritime routes to connect Iran with neighboring countries.
• Attracting Investment: Welcoming both domestic and foreign investments as crucial drivers of economic growth.

Araghchi underscored that achieving these objectives hinges on ensuring lasting security in the maritime domain. He stated, “Maritime security is critical for the global economy,” and highlighted Iran’s role in maintaining security through anti-piracy operations and collaborative efforts with regional nations.

“We believe that maritime security should not be leveraged for pressure by external powers but should result from cooperation among regional states,” he added. Iran’s participation in organizations like the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) underscores its dedication to multilateralism in economic and security cooperation.

However, Araghchi cautioned against external interference, stating that some powers aim to exploit vulnerabilities in the region, which could undermine natural cooperation among neighboring countries. He emphasized that decisions regarding the future of the Indian Ocean should be made by the regional nations for the benefit of their peoples.
