A delegation led by Shina Ansari from Iran’s Department of Environment is attending the Zero Waste Forum in Istanbul from October 17-19. The forum, organized by the Zero Waste Foundation and Turkish ministries, focuses on transforming waste management policies, mobilizing financial resources, and building international alliances. Iran faces severe waste management challenges, with improper handling of around 445,000 tons of waste daily, resulting in significant environmental damage estimated at $791 million annually. The Department of Environment is developing a national strategic plan to improve waste management practices, emphasizing waste reduction and recycling. The forum aims to foster global collaboration for sustainable solutions.
In Iran, five new rare diseases have been identified, bringing the total to 456, according to the Rare Disease Foundation. The new conditions include Schwachman Diamond Syndrome and Mowat Wilson Syndrome, among others. Rare diseases typically affect few individuals, often leading to significant psychological burdens for patients and families due to limited treatment options. Approximately 80% of these diseases are genetic, with many manifesting in childhood. The World Health Organization highlights the importance of early detection and public awareness. Enhanced support systems and healthcare policies are essential as the number of rare diseases continues to rise, necessitating collaborative efforts for better management.
Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry, coordinator general of COMSTECH, highlighted Iran’s strong capabilities in innovation during the inauguration of a new center at Pardis Technology Park in Tehran, a leading hub for technological advancement in West Asia. He emphasized the park’s vital role in fostering scientific cooperation among Islamic nations. Key initiatives include establishing a joint academy to share Iranian experiences in innovation and launching training courses focused on artificial intelligence. These efforts aim to enhance collaboration, build capacity, and promote technological growth among OIC member states, ultimately positioning them competitively in the global technology landscape.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) will host its second international rehabilitation conference, in collaboration with Germany’s University of Münster, focusing on improving rehabilitation services for patients with special needs. Experts, including Professor Ali Gorji, will address challenges in rehabilitation and treatment outcomes. Additionally, the IRCS and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) plan to establish a secretariat in Tehran to enhance rehabilitation services, vital due to war and accidents. The conference aims to utilize modern technologies and foster international collaboration to better support vulnerable populations, including Syrian and Lebanese refugees.
