Iran Joins SCO: Strengthening Multilateral Partnerships Across Key Sectors
In a recent interview, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E. Mr. Turdakun Sydykov, discussed the evolving dynamics between Tehran and Bishkek. The relationship between these two nations has been marked by a commitment to mutual respect and cooperation since they established diplomatic ties on May 10, 1992.
During the interview, Ambassador Sydykov emphasized the absence of disputes between the two countries, highlighting Iran’s early recognition of Kyrgyzstan’s independence. This recognition laid the groundwork for a robust partnership characterized by collaborative efforts across various sectors, including political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian domains.
Strengthening Iran-Kyrgyzstan Economic Ties
When asked about the recent meeting between the Kyrgyz Prime Minister and Iran’s First Vice President, Mr. Sydykov noted that there is substantial potential for economic collaboration that has yet to be fully realized. He outlined key areas of focus for enhancing bilateral relations:
- Political Cooperation: Ongoing dialogues to strengthen political ties.
- Trade and Economic Initiatives: Expanding trade volume and investment opportunities.
- Cultural Exchange: Promoting cultural understanding and cooperation.
- Transportation Networks: Enhancing transit and transportation routes.
Ambassador Sydykov pointed out that the recent meeting between the Kyrgyz and Iranian leaders was not an isolated event. Previously, in October 2023, discussions at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting in Bishkek also addressed trade and economic cooperation. Plans to establish regular meetings of the Joint Governmental Commission and expand transit corridors were also discussed. The use of Iranian seaports for Kyrgyz exports was highlighted as a promising avenue for growth.
Regional Cooperation Through International Organizations
When discussing regional cooperation, Ambassador Sydykov expressed the significance of engaging with international organizations like the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the SCO:
- EAEU Involvement: Kyrgyzstan supported the Free Trade Agreement between the EAEU and Iran, signed in December 2023.
- Observer Status for Iran: Kyrgyzstan backed Iran’s observer status in the EAEU, enhancing trade opportunities.
- Technical Cooperation: Efforts to eliminate trade barriers and improve customs cooperation are underway.
- SCO Membership: Kyrgyzstan actively supported Iran’s membership, which opens doors for larger-scale cooperation.
Ambassador Sydykov conveyed that Iran’s accession to the SCO, a prominent regional organization, could facilitate extensive economic, political, and cultural collaboration among member states, addressing issues such as regional security and counter-terrorism efforts.
Enhancing Cultural Awareness Between Kyrgyzstan and Iran
Despite the promising economic and political interactions, the Ambassador acknowledged the need for greater cultural familiarity between the two nations. He pointed out that many Iranians are not well-acquainted with Kyrgyzstan, often confusing it with neighboring countries. Conversely, some Kyrgyz people may mistakenly associate Iran with other Middle Eastern nations.
To bridge this gap, the Kyrgyz Embassy in Iran is undertaking initiatives to promote tourism and cultural exchange. Upcoming plans include:
- Organizing an Iranian delegation visit to Kyrgyzstan featuring travel companies and media representatives.
- Participating in the Economic Cooperation Organization’s Regional Planning Council meeting to advocate for tourism initiatives.
- Conducting briefings for Iranian media to boost awareness of Kyrgyz culture.
The Role of Cultural and Media Cooperation
Ambassador Sydykov stressed that cultural and media cooperation is crucial for fostering understanding between Kyrgyzstan and Iran. He noted several initiatives that promote cultural exchange:
- Film Festivals: Participation of Kyrgyz films in Iranian festivals to encourage joint productions.
- Theater Collaborations: Engagements between Kyrgyz theater troupes and Iranian festivals.
- Media Partnerships: Strengthening ties with Iranian media outlets to facilitate better communication and collaboration.
Additionally, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of the media in enhancing bilateral relations, noting the operational presence of Iranian media in Kyrgyzstan and the collaborative efforts made since 2014.
In conclusion, Ambassador Sydykov’s insights reflect a shared vision for deepening the relationship between Kyrgyzstan and Iran, emphasizing economic, cultural, and political cooperation as vital components for future growth.
