In a significant diplomatic move, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with neighboring countries during a meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in Tehran. This commitment to expanding bilateral relations is a key aspect of Iran’s foreign policy.

The Qatari Emir’s visit to Tehran included discussions with President Masoud Pezeshkian before he met with Ayatollah Khamenei. During this meeting, various important points were highlighted:

  • Expansion of Ties: Ayatollah Khamenei reiterated that enhancing relations with neighboring countries is a “definite policy” of the Islamic Republic.
  • Progress Achieved: The Leader acknowledged the positive measures taken by President Pezeshkian’s administration to foster better relations, noting that some progress has already been made.
  • Agreements and Benefits: He expressed hope that the agreements made earlier in the day would mutually benefit both Iran and Qatar, allowing both nations to fulfill their “neighborly duties” more effectively.
  • Friendly Relations: Ayatollah Khamenei described Qatar as a “friendly and brotherly country,” despite existing issues such as the matter of frozen Iranian assets.
  • Frozen Assets: Approximately $6 billion in Iranian funds remain frozen due to U.S. sanctions and are currently held in a Qatari bank.
  • U.S. Obstruction: The Leader criticized the United States for hindering the agreement to return these funds to Iran, urging Qatar to resist U.S. pressure.

In response, the Emir of Qatar expressed his satisfaction with the discussions and lauded Iran’s support for the Palestinian cause. He acknowledged the ongoing tensions in the West Asia region, emphasizing the need for regional cooperation to tackle current challenges.

Furthermore, the Emir highlighted the agreements reached between the two nations and announced that a joint commission would soon be established to enhance bilateral trade.
