Strengthening Health Ties between Iran, China, and India

Under a 25-year strategic partnership agreement, Iran and China are set to implement joint programs in the pharmaceutical and medical fields, as stated by Hamid Inanlou, an official with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). “The joint programs aim to boost commercial, scientific, and industrial capacities of the two nations, enhance domestic production, and facilitate access to regional markets,” Inanlou stated, as reported by IRNA.

This long-term partnership emphasizes expanding collaborations in the health sector, including:

  • Sharing expertise and technology
  • Conducting medical research
  • Training and exchanging specialized human resources
  • Developing new medicines

Inanlou further highlighted the focus on manufacturing medical and laboratory equipment, such as syringes and diagnostic kits, as well as establishing joint ventures.

In April, Iranian Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarqandi met with his Indian counterpart to explore expanding health cooperation. This meeting took place during the eighth gathering of health ministries from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Xi’an, China.

During discussions with Punya Salila Srivastava, the Indian Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, both officials emphasized the importance of enhancing joint efforts in the health sector. Key areas of focus included:

  • Manufacturing medicines
  • Developing vaccines
  • Traditional medicine
  • Medical training

Zafarqandi praised India’s advancements in the health sector and expressed Iran’s readiness to collaborate, particularly in supplying pharmaceutical raw materials. He also emphasized the rich capacities of both countries in traditional medicine, stating, “Iran is willing to exchange knowledge and experiences with India, as well as conduct joint research in traditional medicine.”

Furthermore, the Iranian health minister proposed promoting cooperation on primary health care, recognizing the mutual benefits that such collaboration could yield. The Indian official acknowledged the previously signed agreements between the two nations and expressed India’s willingness to expand collaboration in various health sector areas.

This strengthening of ties between Iran, China, and India marks a significant step forward in enhancing healthcare collaboration and innovation in the region.
