Combat Food Waste: Key Strategies for a Food-Secure Future

Achieving Global Food Security: The Key Role of Reducing Food Loss and Waste

The International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction, observed every year on September 29, emphasizes the critical need to tackle food loss and waste. This global initiative aims to create a food-secure world, ensuring that both current and future populations have access to sufficient and nutritious food. In a world where approximately one in eleven individuals suffers from hunger, it is alarming that tons of food are lost or wasted daily. This paradox highlights the urgent need for effective strategies to reduce food loss and waste.

According to recent statistics, around 13.2 percent of food produced globally is lost between harvest and retail. Additionally, an estimated 19 percent of total global food production is wasted at the household, food service, and retail levels. These figures underscore the enormity of the issue and its implications on food security and environmental sustainability.

Food loss and waste not only jeopardize the sustainability of our food systems but also squander valuable resources. When food is lost or wasted, all the resources utilized in its production—such as water, land, energy, labor, and capital—are wasted as well. Furthermore, the disposal of food waste in landfills generates greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change. The negative impact of food loss and waste extends beyond environmental concerns, affecting food security and raising food costs.

To address these challenges, it is crucial that food systems become resilient and sustainable. Here are some key actions that can be taken to reduce food loss and waste:

  • Adopt Integrated Approaches: Focus on strategies that bring together various stakeholders to minimize food loss and waste.
  • Embrace Technology and Innovation: Utilize technologies such as e-commerce platforms for marketing and retractable mobile food processing systems.
  • Promote Best Practices: Implement effective practices to manage food quality throughout the supply chain.
  • Raise Awareness: Educate consumers and businesses about the importance of reducing food waste.

These transformative changes are essential to realizing the goal of sustainable food systems. Reducing food loss and waste is not just an environmental issue; it is also a fundamental aspect of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, SDG 12 aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. Under Target 12.3, the objective is to “halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains” by 2030.

With only five years remaining to achieve Target 12.3, there is an urgent need to accelerate efforts to combat food loss and waste. This year’s theme, “Stop food loss and waste. For the people. For the Planet,” serves as a rallying call for individuals and organizations alike—from producers and businesses to supply chains, consumers, governments, and researchers—to take immediate action.

By working together, we can expand and strengthen our initiatives to reduce food loss and waste. Here are some ways you can contribute to this crucial cause:

  1. Be Mindful of Food Purchasing: Buy only what you need to reduce excess food at home.
  2. Store Food Properly: Learn how to store food to extend its shelf life and prevent spoilage.
  3. Plan Your Meals: Create meal plans to use ingredients efficiently and minimize waste.
  4. Donate Unused Food: Support local food banks or organizations that accept food donations.

In conclusion, the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction is more than just a day of recognition; it represents a vital opportunity to take meaningful action towards creating a food-secure world. By actively participating in efforts to reduce food loss and waste, we can ensure that future generations have access to the nutritious food they need. Let us unite in this mission for the benefit of both people and the planet.
