New National Taskforce Launched to Combat Subsidence Threats to Isfahan’s Historic Monuments

Iran’s government has taken a significant step towards preserving Isfahan’s rich cultural heritage by approving the formation of a National Taskforce to Combat Subsidence. This initiative, under the supervision of the First Vice President, aims to protect the city’s historical monuments and world heritage sites, as highlighted by Amir Karamzadeh, the head of the Isfahan Cultural Heritage Department. The subsidence crisis in Isfahan requires urgent attention due to its potential impact on the area’s historical integrity.

Karamzadeh discussed the alarming dimensions of the land subsidence crisis affecting Isfahan’s historical areas, stating that the issue has gained recognition beyond scientific circles, reaching the level of national governance. He emphasized that the iconic buildings in Isfahan are in serious jeopardy due to subsidence.

According to Karamzadeh, the subsidence rates reported in Isfahan’s historical regions are derived from thorough scientific studies. He noted: “We have investigated the issue of subsidence in the field and in detail in cooperation with the Watershed Management Organization and the Governorate’s Crisis Headquarters.” The primary cause of the subsidence is attributed to the drying up of the Zayandeh River, which has led to the depletion of underground aquifers that have historically provided water resources to the city.

He elaborated on the situation: “These aquifers fed underground water resources for centuries, but today, with widespread extraction and the cessation of the flow of the Zayandeh River, the underground aquifers have been emptied, resulting in holes in the ground that lead to subsidence.”

The formation of the National Taskforce is a recognition that the subsidence crisis extends beyond provincial issues; it is now a national concern. “This taskforce will operate under the chairmanship of the First Vice President and is intended to provide basic solutions to contain this crisis,” Karamzadeh stated.

In a bid to address the financial aspects of this crisis, Karamzadeh revealed that the province proposed a budget of approximately 3,000 billion rials (around $3.3 million) to the national crisis management headquarters. He expressed hope for adequate funding to mitigate the losses caused by subsidence, emphasizing that “this is a national issue and the province’s capacity to deal with it is not sufficient.”

Furthermore, Karamzadeh indicated that at least 1,000 billion rials (about $1.1 million) is necessary to retrofit Isfahan’s historical monuments adequately. This estimate pertains solely to the city of Isfahan and underscores the extensive nature of the crisis.

Expert studies reveal varying rates of subsidence across different buildings in the area, with measurements ranging from two to three centimeters in some locations to as much as 15 centimeters in other parts of the historical texture. Karamzadeh highlighted that the most critical areas at risk include:

  • Naqsh-e Jahan Square
  • Imam Mosque
  • Historical bazaar

Due to the potential for damage, emergency reinforcement of these sites has become a priority to avert possible collapse. “These measures are not temporary, but if implemented correctly, they can control the process of destruction,” he assured.

Karamzadeh also pointed out the heightened vulnerability of Isfahan’s historical minarets to subsidence. He noted, “Minarets are at greater risk due to their special foundation and high height. If they tilt slightly or subsidence occurs under their foundations, the possibility of destruction increases greatly.” As a result, he urged for immediate attention on strengthening the minarets’ foundations to enhance their resistance against tilting.

He emphasized the urgency of timely intervention, stating, “If these measures are not taken in a timely manner, even a small earthquake can pose a serious risk to the minarets.” Karamzadeh called for concurrent efforts in preventive measures against subsidence alongside seismic retrofitting. He referenced past earthquakes, noting that buildings with weak foundations suffered the most damage during such events.

In summary, the establishment of the National Taskforce to Combat Subsidence marks a pivotal moment in safeguarding Isfahan’s invaluable historical legacy. As the government mobilizes resources and implements strategies, the hope remains that these efforts will effectively mitigate the risks posed by subsidence and protect the cultural heritage of this ancient city.
