Sarein Set to Transform into a Smart Tourism Hub, Announces Governor-General

Located in Iran’s Ardabil province, Sarein is poised to transform into a premier smart tourism and health tourism city. Recent initiatives aim to enhance its accommodation facilities, hotels, and eco-tourism services to meet international standards, as stated by provincial governor-general Masoud Emami-Yeganeh during a recent tourism project inauguration.

During a ceremony held to celebrate Government Week (September 23-29), Emami-Yeganeh highlighted the immense potential of Sarein as a tourist destination, emphasizing its ranking among the top ten tourist provinces in Iran. He remarked on the unique characteristics that make Sarein a globally significant location for tourism.

Emami-Yeganeh outlined several key aspects necessary for the development of Sarein:

  • Traffic-Free Tourism Spaces: Ensuring that sidewalks, tourist hotspots, and routes leading to accommodations and recreational centers are free from traffic.
  • Long-Term Vision: Developing a long-term tourism strategy for Sarein that prioritizes both construction and the comfort of visitors.
  • Training and Human Resources: Emphasizing the importance of skilled tourism service providers and experienced personnel in enhancing the visitor experience.
  • Investment and Financing: Welcoming public participation and private investments to support tourism projects, including consultations with the CEOs of major banks for financing.

According to Emami-Yeganeh, the tourism and service economy constitutes 49 percent of the added value in Ardabil province, with a significant portion generated in Sarein. This underscores the necessity for a national perspective on the city’s growth and development.

Despite challenges posed during the recent 12-day conflict, the province effectively managed the influx of travelers, maintaining a high level of satisfaction among visitors. Emami-Yeganeh noted that there were no reports of dissatisfaction in Sarein during this period, highlighting the province’s efficient handling of tourist support.

Several ongoing projects in Sarein are set to improve the local tourism landscape:

  • Sarein Tourism Complex: Under construction with a budget of 2,000 billion rials (approximately $2.2 million), this complex is a cornerstone of the city’s tourism strategy.
  • Economic Projects: A total of 24 economic initiatives are being executed in Sarein, many of which are over 60 percent complete.
  • Job Creation: The completion of these projects is expected to provide employment opportunities for around 800 individuals.

Additionally, Emami-Yeganeh pointed out that improvements to communication roads in Sarein are underway, backed by a budget of three trillion rials for enhancing the city’s infrastructure. He emphasized the need for well-equipped hotels to serve visitors effectively and assured that there are no obstacles to the implementation of these vital projects. Special incentives will be provided to investors interested in contributing to the tourism sector.

Further development plans include:

  • Water Park Construction: A new water park is set to enhance leisure options for visitors.
  • School Projects: Educational infrastructure will be improved with the collaboration of local benefactors.

During a recent visit by the President to Ardabil province, discussions focused on reopening border crossings for land passenger traffic. The neighboring country has indicated that Ardabil province will be prioritized for reopening, which is expected to facilitate greater movement and tourism.

Moreover, there are plans to establish a joint free trade zone with the Republic of Azerbaijan in Bileh Savar, which could significantly benefit the economy of Ardabil province.

In total, 38 development projects and economic plans were inaugurated during the governor-general’s visit to Sarein, with an investment surpassing 8,360 billion rials. This investment reflects a strong commitment to enhancing the region’s tourism capacity.

Sarein, situated 25 kilometers west of Ardabil and nestled at the foot of the majestic 4,811-meter Sabalan Mountain, is renowned not only within Iran but also internationally. The city boasts numerous attractions, including:

  • Dozens of hot and cold mineral springs
  • Natural baths
  • Stunning landscapes
  • Pleasant weather
  • Modern hotels and recreational facilities

In recent years, Sarein has made significant strides in improving its tourism infrastructure. The establishment of new hotels and suspension bridges has enhanced service quality for visitors. Additionally, the introduction of a “tourism chain” within Sarein’s villages aims to generate income for local residents and bolster the regional economy.

As Sarein continues to evolve as a tourist destination, the collaboration between government, private investors, and local communities will play a pivotal role in realizing its full potential as a hub for smart and health tourism in Iran.
