Iran’s Handicraft Exports Soar to $223 Million: A Boon for Artisans and Economy!

In recent years, Iran has made significant strides in its handicrafts sector, exporting a remarkable $223 million worth of these unique products in the last Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20. This figure does not include an additional similar amount that was exported informally by travelers, according to a senior official from Iran’s cultural heritage authority. The growth and development of Iranian handicrafts highlight the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship that the country has to offer.

Farzad Ojani, the director general of the marketing and commercialization office for handicrafts at the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, shared these insights during a recent meeting with economic investors at the ministry headquarters. The meeting aimed to explore opportunities within the handicrafts sector and enhance collaboration between state and private entities.

Ojani emphasized that one of the primary objectives of his office is to train and empower artisans. He mentioned several key initiatives aimed at promoting Iranian handicrafts:

  • Registering cities and villages: Selected locations are being established as national and global handicraft hubs.

According to Ojani, approximately 7,000 handicraft shops operate throughout Iran, supplemented by both permanent and temporary bazaars. Iran holds a leading position in the global handicrafts market, boasting 299 recognized branches of handicrafts categorized into 18 distinct groups. Furthermore, the country has successfully registered 14 cities and three villages on a global scale for their handicraft offerings, solidifying its status as one of the top nations in this field.
