FM Praises IRCS for Exceptional Support to Pilgrims During Arbaeen Festival

During the recent Arbaeen pilgrimage, the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has played a pivotal role in providing essential health services to millions of pilgrims. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi praised the IRCS for its tireless efforts in assisting those on this significant spiritual journey. The sheer volume of visitors to their medical centers highlights the organization’s critical role in ensuring the well-being of pilgrims.

Araghchi made his remarks while visiting a medical center operated by the IRCS in Najaf, Iraq. He noted, “The number of referrals to the IRCS clinic in Iraq is very high,” adding that between 3:00 and 9:00 am, approximately 800 pilgrims visited the center, with daily patient numbers soaring to nearly 4,000.

The IRCS has been instrumental in delivering a wide range of health services during the Arbaeen pilgrimage, which is one of the world’s largest annual gatherings. From July 26 to August 14, the IRCS provided health services to around 4.1 million pilgrims, showcasing their commitment to public health.

  • 1.05 million patients received visits from IRCS health staff.
  • 1.39 million pilgrims benefited from para-clinic services, including serum therapy and wound dressing.
  • 1.6 million pilgrims received necessary medications.
  • Over 249 wounded or deceased individuals were transferred from Iraq to Iran.

Arbaeen commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, occurring on the 40th day following Ashura, and this year it was observed on August 14. Each year, millions of Shia Muslims undertake the 80-kilometer journey from Najaf to Karbala, which symbolizes Islamic unity, solidarity, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

This year, the IRCS deployed a remarkable 8,200 rescue workers, including relief personnel, physicians, and nurses, to assist pilgrims in Iraq. According to Pirhossein Kolivand, the head of the IRCS, approximately 7,000 IRCS forces were stationed across various routes and borders to provide aid.

Additionally, four hospitals were established along the Najaf-Karbala highway to cater to the healthcare needs of pilgrims. The number of medical mawkibs (voluntary stations) has also increased in key locations such as Karbala, Najaf, and Samarra. Kolivand emphasized that pilgrims could access medical, health, and nutritional consultations through mobile applications at no cost.

To enhance their response capabilities, the IRCS utilized more than 200 specialized vehicles and ambulances during the Arbaeen pilgrimage, ensuring that all medical emergencies were promptly addressed.

In a show of appreciation, Iraqi Health Minister Saleh Mehdi Al-Hasnawi commended the IRCS for its exemplary services rendered during the Arbaeen pilgrimage. In a meeting with an Iranian delegation led by Kolivand, Al-Hasnawi stated, “The Iranian Red Crescent Society’s cooperation with Iraq’s health ministry in providing health services to pilgrims is praiseworthy.”

He further noted that medical services were being delivered collaboratively, benefiting both Iranian and Arab pilgrims alike. On August 5, 2024, Iranian and Iraqi officials convened in Baghdad to strategize and facilitate the Arbaeen pilgrimage, ensuring the safety and well-being of all pilgrims.

During this meeting, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Interior, Majid Mirahmadi, along with Kolivand, engaged with Iraqi Minister of Interior Abdul Amir al-Shammari to discuss the latest arrangements for the pilgrimage. The Iranian officials successfully secured permission to deploy IRCS rescue helicopters and ambulances, enabling them to transport essential medical supplies and equipment to assist pilgrims effectively.

The collaborative efforts between the IRCS and Iraqi authorities exemplify a remarkable commitment to providing humanitarian assistance during one of the most important religious gatherings in the world. The dedication of the IRCS volunteers and medical personnel ensures that pilgrims can focus on their spiritual journey while receiving the necessary care and support.

The ongoing collaboration between Iran and Iraq in health services during such significant events highlights the strength of their partnership and shared values. As the Arbaeen pilgrimage continues to grow each year, the role of the IRCS will remain crucial in safeguarding the health and safety of millions of pilgrims.
