Empowering Youth: The Key Role in Achieving Localized Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The International Youth Day (IYD), celebrated annually on August 12, focuses on the potential of youth as vital partners in global society. This year’s theme, ‘Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond’, emphasizes the crucial role that young individuals play in transforming global goals into community-driven realities.

The significance of youth engagement is paramount as development partners strive to implement global goals tailored to specific local contexts. Young people possess creativity, insight, and strong community ties that are essential in bridging the gap between policy and practice. With over 65 percent of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets linked to local governance, it is clear that youth involvement is not merely beneficial but essential.

This year’s IYD also highlights the vital role of local and regional governments. These authorities, being closest to the communities they serve, are in a unique position to:

  • Create inclusive policy environments
  • Allocate necessary resources
  • Establish mechanisms for youth participation in local planning and decision-making

By integrating youth priorities into local and regional strategies, officials can collaborate with young people to turn their innovative ideas into impactful solutions. This year’s IYD carries additional significance as it coincides with the upcoming 30th anniversary of the World Program of Action for Youth. This program serves as a guiding framework that recognizes youth as key players in sustainable development and participatory governance—principles that resonate with this year’s theme. The discussions surrounding the 2025 IYD theme will also contribute to the preparations for the Second World Summit for Social Development, set to take place in Doha in November.

As the global community approaches the 2030 deadline for achieving the SDGs, IYD 2025 calls for real investments in inclusive policies and programs that leverage local youth actions. The youth population possesses the potential to contribute significantly to a hopeful future.

“In today’s world, where the competition among countries relies more than ever on the productivity of knowledge and human resources, no factor other than the youth population can contribute to a hopeful future for any nation,” stated Alireza Raeisi, an official from the health ministry, as reported by IRNA. His remarks came during the national population week observed from May 14 to 20.

Iran is currently experiencing a population window of opportunity, characterized by a significant proportion of the population being of working age. This unique phase presents opportunities for economic, social, and cultural growth, necessitating comprehensive policies in various sectors such as:

  • Education
  • Welfare
  • Family support

However, failing to capitalize on this opportunity may lead to numerous demographic challenges, including an aging population, a shrinking workforce, and disruptions in intergenerational balance in the near future.

Raeisi elaborated on the services being provided by the health ministry, which include:

  • Support for over 300 non-governmental anti-abortion centers
  • Training programs aimed at developing a health-oriented family culture
  • Establishment of a digital birth registration system in hospitals

Additional measures in line with the youth population law include:

  • Free natural childbirth services to promote safe and physiological childbirth
  • Extensive insurance coverage (up to 90%) for infertility treatments
  • Free pregnancy consultations
  • Education programs designed for expectant parents
