Three Iranian cities—Babol, Kiashahr, and Gandoman—have been designated as Ramsar wetland cities, emphasizing the importance of wetland conservation and urban involvement in protecting these ecosystems. This recognition showcases Iran’s commitment to environmental preservation, following the accreditation of Bandar Khamir and Varzaneh in 2022. The Wetland City Accreditation Scheme encourages sustainable urban planning, public awareness, and socio-economic benefits from wetland conservation. The cities will receive their certificates at the upcoming COP15 in Zimbabwe, highlighting ongoing efforts for wetland preservation. Iran also hosts 25 Ramsar Sites, covering 1,488,624 hectares, underlining the ecological significance of its wetlands.
Iran’s National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (NIGEB) has developed an innovative anti-cancer vaccine set to launch this summer, aiming to prevent all cancer types. Alongside this, NIGEB has introduced two critical healthcare products: intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg) and albumin, both now available domestically. From October 18 to 24, Iran recorded 125 earthquakes, according to the University of Tehran’s seismological networks. The breakdown includes 102 minor quakes (magnitude <3), 19 (3-4), and 4 (4-5), with no earthquakes exceeding magnitude 5. Key affected provinces were Khorasan Razavi, Yazd, and Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari. A notable quake of 4.7 magnitude occurred in Fars on October 21. Over the past year, 6,272 earthquakes were documented, with 150 exceeding magnitude 4. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently collaborated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences to strengthen Iran’s National Polio Laboratory (NPL) and National Influenza Centre (NIC). This partnership aims to enhance laboratory capacities and infectious disease surveillance. A WHO team visited on November 26 to assess operational needs and strategize improvements. The NPL plays a crucial role in maintaining Iran’s polio-free status, while the NIC focuses on influenza virus detection.
