The Rayan International Artificial Intelligence and Programming Contest concluded at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, featuring participants from 25 countries. Supported by Iran’s Vice Presidency for Science and Technology, the contest began on November 25, with 60 contestants tackling complex algorithmic problems. Aimed at enhancing algorithmic thinking and problem-solving skills, this competition promotes international networking and scientific authority in AI. Last year’s inaugural event attracted around 30,000 participants from 137 countries. Iran also hosts other prestigious competitions, including the International Combinatorics Olympiad and the International Technology Olympics, further establishing its reputation in scientific innovation.
Gandoman Wetland in Borujen county, Iran, is vital for migratory birds, hosting around 40,000 birds annually. Recently recognized as Iran’s 27th wetland of international importance, it spans 1,070 hectares and offers rich biodiversity, including 129 plant species and critical habitats for endemic wildlife. Despite facing threats like drought and pollution, conservation efforts are underway, with local communities being empowered to participate in sustainable practices. A memorandum of understanding signed in June aims to enhance wetland protection through community involvement. This initiative has already led to reduced irrigation consumption and increased agricultural productivity, underscoring wetlands’ ecological significance.
At the COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Sediqeh Torabi from Iran’s Department of Environment emphasized the urgent need for reliable financing to implement climate actions in developing countries, particularly as Iran faces severe climate impacts like droughts and heatwaves. She stressed that without adequate resources, Iran cannot enhance its emissions reduction commitments. Torabi called for strengthening early warning systems and protecting water resources while condemning unilateral coercive measures that hinder access to financial resources. Meanwhile, Shina Ansari discussed Iran’s climate initiatives with international officials, highlighting efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing renewable energy, despite facing sanctions.

With about one in eleven people facing hunger, it’s alarming that 13.2% of food is lost between harvest and retail, and 19% is wasted in households and businesses. This waste exacerbates food insecurity, squanders resources, and contributes to climate change. The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 aims to halve global food waste by 2030. Collective action, innovative technologies, education, and policy changes are essential to combat this pressing issue.
