In a recent discussion on the promotion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy, Karen Hallberg, Secretary General of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, highlighted the importance of transparency and compliance in nuclear activities. This dialogue took place during the Tehran Dialogue Forum 2025.

Hallberg emphasized that the Safeguard Agreements established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) play a critical role in ensuring the peaceful nature of atomic activities worldwide. She stated that achieving a region free from nuclear weapons necessitates adherence to United Nations Security Council resolutions. Key points from her address include:

  • Nuclear weapons do not guarantee security, as evidenced by the experiences of Iraq, Libya, and Syria.

Paolo Cotta, another member of Pugwash Conferences, reinforced the notion that the production of nuclear energy does not inherently lead to the development of nuclear arms. He stressed that nuclear energy is crucial for peaceful applications.

Nasser Hadian, a political science professor at the University of Tehran, pointed out that Israel stands as the only regime in the region possessing nuclear weapons. He also noted that the NPT has allowed certain regimes to acquire atomic bombs.

To further the discourse on nuclear energy and non-proliferation, the Iranian Foreign Ministry organized a specialized meeting on Monday, focusing on nuclear energy and alliances in the region.
