Iran Set to Participate in Nevsky International Ecological Congress: A Global Dialogue on Sustainability

The upcoming 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress, scheduled for May 22-23 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is set to gather influential environmental leaders from around the world. This significant event aims to address pressing ecological challenges and promote sustainable development strategies.

An Iranian delegation will be a key participant in this congress, which will see ministers of the environment from over 40 countries, including Azerbaijan, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Belarus, Serbia, Indonesia, Jordan, Cambodia, and Kenya. The Iranian representatives are expected to highlight critical environmental issues concerning the Caspian Sea, such as:

  • Water level reduction
  • Pollution
  • Fishing and fisheries

Additionally, the Iranian team aims to set a date for the Tehran Convention, which is also scheduled to take place later this year.

The head of the Department of Environment, Shina Ansari, will deliver a keynote speech during the congress. Furthermore, the Iranian delegation is slated to engage in several meetings with high-ranking officials, including the chairman of the Russian Federation Council and the deputy prime minister of Russia, as well as other environment ministers attending the congress.

The participation of the Iranian delegation will also include attending the meeting of the Environment Ministers of the Caspian Sea, along with engagements in the BRICS panel discussions.

Nevsky International Ecological Congress Overview

The theme for this year’s congress is “Planet Earth: Living in Harmony with Nature.” This motto reflects the congress’s objective of creating effective sustainable development mechanisms that can help preserve the environment amid climate change challenges. The Nevsky International Ecological Congress 2025 will foster interstate and intersectoral dialogues focusing on crucial environmental issues.

Among the notable features of the congress will be a Youth Programme launching on May 22. This programme aims to engage young participants in addressing climate issues and promoting environmental awareness. Key topics to be explored include:

  • Engagement of youth in climate resolution
  • Promotion of environmental volunteering
  • Inclusion of children in the ‘green’ agenda
  • The role of youth initiatives in sustainability

On the first day of the congress, a meeting of the State Council Commission of the Russian Federation on Ecological Well-Being will take place. This meeting will bring together representatives from governmental, scientific, and business sectors to discuss strategic guidelines for environmental policymaking in contemporary contexts.

Various roundtables and sessions are set to cover vital topics such as:

  1. Food security and climate risks
  2. Sustainable ecotourism
  3. Application of artificial intelligence and digital solutions for environmental benefits
  4. International collaboration within BRICS
  5. Conditions in the Caspian region
  6. Development of the circular economy
  7. Empowering women in eco-initiatives
  8. Green investment strategies
  9. Management of mineral resources
  10. Advancements in low-carbon technologies

The congress will resume on May 23, with discussions led by regional heads, mayors, and experts focusing on:

  • Modern sustainable development practices in megacities
  • Environmental improvements in transport systems
  • Conservation of green spaces
  • Innovative approaches to health preservation

A special session organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will address the management of Natural World Heritage Sites and transboundary conservation areas. Participants will also explore prospects for water and energy cooperation between Russia and Central Asia, including:

  • Water resource allocation
  • Infrastructure modernization
  • Adaptation strategies for climate change

The plenary session titled “Ecology of the New Reality: Challenges and Opportunities” will serve as a highlight of the congress. This strategic discussion will tackle global and national environmental challenges, examine new opportunities for advancing the green economy, and explore avenues for international cooperation.
