Bahreini Leader Advocates Nuclear Disarmament as Key to Global Peace

In a recent address, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, raised significant concerns regarding the escalating threats posed by nuclear weapons. He emphasized that nuclear disarmament is the only viable path toward achieving lasting world peace.

During the UN Disarmament Conference, Bahreini expressed his apprehension about the concurrent onset of an unprecedented arms race while preparations for the 2025 Disarmament Conference are underway. He highlighted that the rhetoric surrounding the use of nuclear weapons continues to grow.

  • Bahreini noted that substantial resources that could otherwise promote social and economic development are being diverted to the maintenance and production of nuclear arms.
  • He lamented that the nations possessing nuclear weapons have not met their obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), instead opting to modernize their arsenals.
  • Currently, there are approximately 3,880 active nuclear warheads globally, with a staggering total of about 12,000 nuclear warheads.
  • NATO member countries continue to utilize nuclear weapons, contravening their legally binding commitments under the NPT and agreements from past review conferences.

Bahreini’s remarks underscore the urgent need for global leaders to prioritize nuclear disarmament and the establishment of sustainable peace and security, redirecting funds towards constructive development rather than the perpetuation of conflict.
