UN Expresses Condolences for Tragic Explosion at Southern Iranian Port: A Call for Global Support

The recent explosion at Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas, Iran, has resulted in significant casualties, prompting a statement of condolence from the United Nations. This tragic event highlights the ongoing safety concerns at major ports around the world.

Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, expressed his sorrow regarding the incident. He stated, “We were saddened to learn about the large number of casualties caused by the explosion on 26 April at Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas in the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

In his message shared exclusively with IRNA, he added, “We express our condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. We wish the injured a swift recovery.”

The explosion occurred on Saturday, resulting in:

  • Over 700 injuries
  • Significant destruction in surrounding areas
  • Impact on local industries in western Bandar Abbas

The cause of the explosion, which involved a fuel tanker, remains unknown at this time. This incident underscores the critical need for enhanced safety measures at ports to prevent such tragedies in the future.
