Iraq Aims to Strengthen Cooperation with Iran’s Anti-Narcotics Police to Combat Drug Trafficking

In a significant move towards enhancing cross-border security and cooperation, the Iraqi anti-narcotics police chief, Ahmed Al-Zarkani, has emphasized the urgent need for collaborative efforts in combating drug smuggling. This focus on joint activities is crucial for tackling the growing menace of narcotics that affects both Iran and Iraq.

During a recent meeting held in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart, Iraj Kakavand, Al-Zarkani praised Iran’s ongoing efforts in the war against drugs. He remarked, “We welcome boosting joint activities with Iran’s anti-narcotics police and look forward to expanding cooperation on other drug-related issues,” as reported by ISNA.

Al-Zarkani also stressed the importance of sharing intelligence on drug traffickers. He stated, “A targeted, comprehensive fight against anti-narcotics requires a lot of efforts and goes beyond the national borders of the two countries; by fostering cooperation, we will be able to adopt appropriate measures to deal more decisively with drug trafficking.”

The Iranian anti-narcotics police chief, Kakavand, reciprocated the sentiment by highlighting the necessity to intensify the crackdown on armed drug traffickers operating along the shared borders. He noted, “Controlling the borders and drug traffickers who buy and sell weapons in exchange for drug trafficking on joint borders will lower the opportunity for any criminal activities by the armed drug smugglers at borders.”

Following previously signed memorandums of understanding, Iran’s anti-narcotics police aims to enhance collaboration in several key areas:

  • Simultaneous border patrols
  • Understanding drug smuggling methods and transit routes
  • Establishing specialized teams to tackle specific cases
  • Exchanging information on smugglers and detainees

Regional Cooperation is Vital

In July 2024, the former Interior Minister, Ahmad Vahidi, participated in the second International Conference on Drug Control held in Baghdad. During this two-day event, Vahidi engaged with counterparts from various countries to explore cooperative measures in combating drug trafficking.

The conference featured the participation of the Iraqi Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, along with anti-narcotics police chiefs from neighboring countries. During the discussions, Kakavand reiterated the critical nature of regional cooperation in addressing drug trafficking issues. He noted, “Iran’s all-round efforts in the battle against narcotics and illicit trafficking are essential, especially given the extensive border trafficking.”

Iran’s Commitment to Combat Drug Trafficking

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has recognized Iran’s substantial commitment to combating drug trafficking. On December 8, 2024, Alexander Fedulov, the UNODC Iran Country Representative, attended a high-level meeting at the Drug Control Headquarters (DCHQ) to commend the successful seizure of 2,400 kilograms of methamphetamine in Sistan–Baluchestan Province.

During this meeting, Brigadier General Ahmad Ali Goudarzi, Commander of the Iranian Border Guard, elaborated on the major drug seizure that took place on September 10, 2024. This operation highlighted the unwavering dedication of Iran’s border forces in tackling drug production and trafficking, particularly from Afghanistan.

Brigadier General Goudarzi emphasized, “This seizure not only reflects the escalating challenges posed by methamphetamine production in the region but also the dedication of Iran’s border guards, law enforcement, and customs officials in addressing this issue.”

Fedulov expressed his gratitude towards Iranian authorities for their significant contributions to this global issue, emphasizing the need for strengthened regional cooperation and further international support. He stated, “This successful operation will be presented to the international community as a testament to Iran’s noble resolve in combating drug trafficking and its dedication to regional security.”
