US Resolution Must Uphold Palestinian Rights: A Call for Justice

In a recent address at the United Nations, Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative Amir Saeed Iravani highlighted pressing issues regarding the humanitarian crisis in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) and the Occupied Syrian Golan. The recent rejection of the ICJ’s advisory opinion by Israeli authorities reflects their disregard for global legal standards.

Moreover, the ongoing blockade of Gaza has led to extensive destruction of critical infrastructure, including schools and hospitals. Ambassador Iravani condemned the use of starvation as a method of warfare, stating that such actions intensify human suffering and undermine the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to return to their homeland and live in dignity.

He further expressed alarm over the recent escalation of violence, noting that in the past month alone, hundreds of ceasefire violations occurred in Gaza. Over 270 Palestinians have been reported killed, with many more injured. “This situation is profoundly regrettable,” he said, particularly for civilians who had hoped for peace.

The ambassador emphasized Iran’s steadfast support for initiatives aimed at ending the genocide in Gaza and called for:

  • The establishment of a permanent ceasefire.
  • Facilitation of unhindered humanitarian aid delivery.
  • Restoration of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.

Ambassador Iravani also addressed concerns regarding the recent adoption of a U.S. draft resolution. He noted that while many Security Council members expressed apprehension about the resolution’s mechanisms, they voted in favor to halt the bloodshed in Gaza. The resolution aims to protect Palestinian civilians and ensure a durable ceasefire, but it must not undermine the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination.

He declared that Gaza should remain an integral part of Palestinian territory, administered by a transitional Palestinian committee, and emphasized that no annexation or forced displacement should be allowed under the new resolution. Humanitarian aid must flow freely throughout Gaza, facilitated by UN agencies without interference.

In closing, the Iranian ambassador reiterated that ending the war against the people of Gaza does not absolve international bodies from their legal and moral obligations to ensure justice and accountability. He called for prosecuting those responsible for war crimes and ending the culture of impunity surrounding the Israeli regime.

Additionally, regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic, Ambassador Iravani condemned the ongoing illegal Israeli presence and military actions that have resulted in the death and injury of Syrian citizens, as well as the destruction of vital infrastructure. He reaffirmed that Israel’s attempts to impose its jurisdiction on the occupied Syrian Golan Heights are null and void under international law.
