TEHRAN – Iran is set to welcome the science ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) this upcoming spring, according to the Minister of Science, Research, and Technology, Hossein Simaei-Sarraf. This significant event highlights Iran’s commitment to enhancing scientific and technological collaboration within the OIC framework, focusing on initiatives such as the establishment of science and technology parks and the exchange of professors and students.

During a recent meeting with Hissein Brahim Taha, the Secretary General of the OIC, Simaei-Sarraf expressed Iran’s eagerness to foster international interactions through scientific cooperation. This initiative aims to strengthen ties between Islamic nations and promote advancements in technology and research.

Iran’s Scientific Achievements Among Islamic Nations

According to data from the Web of Science, Iran has made remarkable strides in various scientific fields, securing notable rankings among Islamic countries:

  • Iran ranks first among Islamic countries in neural network technology with 17,458 documents.
  • In the field of multi-agent systems, Iran holds the top position with 351 documents.
  • Globally, Iran ranks 6th in neural network technology and 12th in multi-agent systems.
  • In terms of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and robotics, Iran claims the second position among Islamic nations.
  • Over a ten-year period from 2014 to 2023, Iran achieved second place in three-dimensional printing with 606 publications, ranking 22nd globally.

The report released in January also highlighted the growth of publications related to three-dimensional printing and additive manufacturing in Iran from 2010 to 2023, showcasing the country’s dedication to advancing technology in this sector.

Leading Universities Contributing to Research

The following universities have been pivotal in contributing to Iran’s scientific output:

  1. University of Tehran: 83 documents
  2. Amirkabir University of Technology: 83 documents
  3. Tarbiat Modarres University: 40 documents
  4. Tehran University of Medical Sciences: 37 documents

Additionally, Iran has shown impressive results in the field of four-dimensional (4D) printing, with 65 documents, ranking first among Islamic nations and 11th globally.

Commitment to Sharing Knowledge and Expertise

In May 2023, Vahid Haddadi-Asl, the deputy science minister, emphasized Iran’s readiness to share its technological expertise with other Islamic countries. He stated, “Science and technology should be applied to create world peace and human justice. Muslim countries can bring peace and progress not only to the Muslim nations but also to humanity through unity and empathy.”

This statement was made during the 1st Ministerial Meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Dialogue Platform (OIC-15) held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on May 25-26. Haddadi-Asl highlighted that despite facing international sanctions, Iran has achieved significant advancements in education, research, and technology, showcasing the resilience and dedication of Iranian scholars and scientists.
