Strengthening Bonds: Tehran Times Champions Iran-China Friendship Through Ink and Influence

The 46th anniversary of The Tehran Times was commemorated in Beijing, highlighting the essential role of media in bolstering Iran-China relations. This distinguished event, attended by Chinese Ambassador Cong Peiwu, reinforced the importance of independent media narratives in shaping diplomatic ties and fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.

As the oldest English-language newspaper in Iran, The Tehran Times has been a pivotal platform for dialogue and cultural exchange. Ambassador Cong’s presence at the celebration signified a commitment to deepening bilateral relations, particularly in an age where information is crucial for diplomacy.

Both Iran and China face scrutiny from Western media and increasingly rely on independent outlets to share their stories of cooperation. Cong’s participation at the anniversary event underscores Beijing’s recognition of the media as a vital tool for soft power and shared narratives.

The collaboration between these two nations transcends economic partnerships, moving into cultural and informational exchanges that are essential in today’s digital landscape. The anniversary not only marked a significant milestone for The Tehran Times but also highlighted the growing trend of media diplomacy as a means of building trust and solidarity between allies.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Cong Peiwu addressed the audience, emphasizing the significance of The Tehran Times as Iran’s “most influential English-language publication” over the past 46 years. He praised the newspaper for adhering to its founding mission of objective and fair reporting.

“As Iran’s most influential English-language publication, over the past 46 years, it has always adhered to its founding mission and the principles of objective and fair reporting. It has vividly introduced Iran’s development achievements and unique cultural charm with warm and engaging writing, and deeply interpreted regional and international hotspots from an independent and discerning perspective. Widely praised at home and recognized by numerous international readers, The Tehran Times has become an important platform for Iran to reach out to the outside world,”

— Cong Peiwu, Chinese Ambassador

Cong further discussed a significant cooperation agreement signed between the Mehr Media Group and Xinhua News Agency in October 2024. He referred to this agreement as a “milestone event” that opened a new chapter in media cooperation between Iran and China.

The ambassador stated, “Media cooperation is an indispensable part of the relationship between Iran and China.” He highlighted the close exchanges and partnerships between the two nations across various fields, with media cooperation being a vital component of this relationship.

The agreement was signed by Mohammad Mahdi Rahmati, CEO of Mehr Media Group, and Fu Hua, president of Xinhua, during the 6th World Media Summit held in Urumqi, the capital of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The aim of this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to expand collaboration between the two news agencies.

In his speech, Cong also highlighted the importance of media as a bridge for fostering friendly exchanges between countries and promoting mutual learning among different civilizations. He referenced an initiative introduced by President Xi Jinping, known as the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), which was proposed in March 2023.

  • The GCI advocates respect for the diversity of civilizations.
  • It emphasizes the common values of humanity.
  • The initiative highlights the importance of inheritance and innovation of civilizations.
  • It promotes robust international people-to-people exchanges and cooperation.

Cong also stressed the need to build “a community with a shared future for mankind,” aiming to create a more peaceful and prosperous world. China advocates for a fair and just international order, seeking to establish a global community that envisions a shared future for all humanity.

According to him, international relations should not be dominated by a single power but should emerge from collaborative dialogues among all nations. This vision aligns with the essence of media cooperation, allowing countries like Iran and China to share their stories and strengthen their ties in a world characterized by rapid change.

The emphasis on media’s role in diplomacy signifies a growing acknowledgment of its power to influence perceptions and foster international relationships. As both nations continue to enhance their cooperation, the role of The Tehran Times and similar outlets will remain crucial in narrating their stories to the global audience.

The celebration of the 46th anniversary of The Tehran Times thus stands as a testament to the integral role of media in diplomacy and cultural exchange, paving the way for more collaborative efforts between Iran and China in the future.
