Shahrzad Theater Presents Captivating Reading Performance of ‘Fools’

Get ready for a delightful evening of theater as the Shahrzad Theater Complex in Tehran presents a reading performance of Neil Simon’s beloved comedic fable, “Fools.” This engaging production, directed by Omid Alahkouhi, features a talented cast including Ramin Parchami, Amir Khanzadeh, Abbas Zamani, Yasaman Kazemi, and Sepideh Qassemi. Based on a Persian translation by Shahram Zargar, the play promises to entertain audiences with its humor and wit.

Set in the quaint village of Kulyenchikov, Ukraine, during the late 19th century, “Fools” follows the story of Leon Steponovich Tolchinsky, a schoolteacher who embarks on a new chapter in his life as he educates Sophia, the daughter of Dr. Zubritsky and his wife, Lenya. However, Leon quickly discovers that the village is under a curse that renders its residents foolish. Complications arise when he falls in love with his student, Sophia.

Neil Simon masterfully blends historical facts with fiction, crafting a narrative that is as enlightening as it is entertaining. The play humorously critiques the conventions of traditional Russian culture and the absurdities of the Czarist regime, all while maintaining a playful and light-hearted tone.

With Simon’s signature quick wit and clever dialogue, “Fools” keeps audiences roaring with laughter. Some of the comedic elements include:

  • Mistaken identities
  • Wacky misunderstandings
  • Absurd situations

The play also delves into deeper themes such as love, family, and cultural identity, adding emotional depth to the humor. Originally premiering on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in 1981, the play was somewhat of an unexpected creation, born from an agreement Simon made with his wife during their divorce proceedings. To fulfill the terms of their settlement, he aimed to write a play that would not succeed on Broadway.

In 1984, “Fools” was adapted into a stage musical titled “The Curse of Kulyenchikov,” featuring a book and music by Peter Melnick, with lyrics by Pat Pattison and direction by Paul Warner. This musical ran from April to May 1984 at the Old Library at Leverett House, Harvard University. Following this, with Simon’s approval, another musical adaptation titled “Kulyenchikov” premiered in San Jose, California, in November 1990.

In Iran, several directors have staged productions of “Fools,” including notable names like Nader Naderpur, Hooman Rahnemun, Majid Behnamifar, Mohsen Sotudeh, Majid Kashiforushan, Faezeh Rastegar, and Satia Nuruzi, showcasing the play’s enduring popularity and relevance in Tehran theaters over the years.

Neil Simon (1927-2018) was an eminent American playwright and screenwriter, known for his extensive body of work that includes over 30 plays. He holds the record for the most combined Oscar and Tony nominations for any writer, solidifying his status as one of Broadway’s most reliable hitmakers and one of the world’s most performed playwrights. While he is primarily recognized for his comedic contributions, some of his works, particularly the Eugene Trilogy and The Sunshine Boys, offer poignant reflections on the Jewish-American experience of the 20th century.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience “Fools” in Tehran. The blend of humor, romance, and cultural commentary promises a memorable evening for all theater enthusiasts.
