Reviving History: Restoration Kicks Off for the Iconic Kahnuj Fortress
In a significant move towards promoting sustainable tourism, Morteza Nikrou, the Head of the Kerman Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department, has announced the commencement of restoration work on the historic fortress in Kahnuj county. With an investment of over seven billion rials (approximately $7,000), this project aims to protect and revitalize ancient buildings in the region.
Nikrou emphasized the importance of safeguarding these historical structures as part of a broader strategy for sustainable tourism development. He stated that the restoration and reconstruction of the Kahnuj castle has officially begun, facilitated by provincial funding and the appointment of a contractor, according to a report by ISNA.
The restoration efforts will include:
- Use of traditional bricks
- Application of traditional insulation
- Plastering and banding techniques
- Strengthening structural elements
- Organizing the surrounding area
Nikrou remarked, “The restoration and revitalization of historical buildings is not only a protective measure but also a fundamental step towards the development of sustainable tourism in the province.” This initiative is part of the “World’s Smile to Kerman 1405” program, which aims to showcase a dynamic and vibrant image of historical Kerman through a series of restoration projects across various cities and villages in the province.
He further noted, “With the contribution of the private sector and local institutions, alongside the expertise of Iranian specialists, we aim to transform valuable historical buildings from inactive status into vibrant tourist, cultural, and residential spaces. This approach will help preserve the authenticity of Iranian architecture while creating employment opportunities and attracting both domestic and international tourists.”
