Over 55,000 Art Lovers Flock to Tehran for Stunning Picasso Exhibition

Discover the captivating world of Picasso in Tehran, an exhibition that brings together 66 exceptional works from the esteemed collection of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMoCA). One of the standout features of this exhibition is the display of 26 aquatint prints from the legendary series “La Tauromaquia” (The Art of Bullfighting). These prints, created in 1957, have never before been exhibited in Iran and highlight Picasso’s profound connection to Spanish cultural traditions, as well as his exceptional skills in printmaking.

During the opening ceremony, Nadereh Rezai, a prominent figure in the art community, emphasized the evolving role of museums in contemporary society. She stated, “Museums are no longer merely repositories for artworks; they serve as centers for innovative storytelling, creativity, and artistic research. With continued support and collaboration, we aim to present more inspiring narratives through art.”

Rezai also pointed to Picasso’s significant impact on the global art scene, remarking, “Artists like Picasso revolutionized the art world with their unique styles, shaping artistic movements beyond their time. Contemporary art in Iran also holds significant cultural and artistic value, and I hope this exhibition will inspire even more impactful showcases in the future.”

Adding to the ceremony, the Spanish Ambassador to Iran, Antonio Sánchez-Benedito Gaspar, acknowledged Picasso’s extraordinary artistic legacy. He expressed, “Born in Málaga, Picasso remains one of the greatest artistic geniuses of the 20th century. His work continuously evolved over seven prolific decades, pioneering Cubism, collage, and decorative arts. He was always ahead of his time.”

Gaspar also highlighted the political depth of Picasso’s artistry, particularly through his iconic painting “Guernica.” He remarked, “This iconic painting dramatically depicts the horrors of war, delivering a universal message of peace and coexistence. Picasso’s artistic concerns were deeply rooted in a search for new expressive methods.”

In his speech, Gaspar expressed gratitude towards Iranian cultural authorities, stating, “I am honored to witness this exhibition, not just as Spain’s ambassador but also as someone born in Picasso’s hometown. I hope this event fosters future cultural collaborations between Iran and Spain.”
