Optimism Mixed with Caution: Araqchi’s Insights Post-Rome Talks

In a significant development regarding the Iran nuclear negotiations, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has expressed his cautious optimism about the ongoing discussions between Iran and the United States. The talks, which took place in Rome, have fostered a relatively positive atmosphere that may pave the way for a potential agreement.

Araqchi shared his thoughts on social media, stating: “Relatively positive atmosphere in Rome has enabled progress on principles and objectives of a possible deal.” This statement comes after the conclusion of the second round of talks, where both parties agreed to continue discussions focused on Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of U.S. sanctions.

Key insights from Araqchi during the negotiations include:

  • The Iranian delegation emphasized that many Iranians view the 2015 Iran deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as “no longer good enough for us.”
  • Araqchi noted that for many, what remains of the JCPOA are merely “lessons learned.”
  • The discussions highlighted the repercussions of the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, which led to the imposition of “maximum pressure” sanctions on Iran, despite its compliance with the accord.

Looking ahead, Araqchi mentioned that expert-level talks are expected to commence in the coming days, indicating that “we will be in a better position to judge” the outcomes. He reiterated that while optimism is warranted, it should be accompanied by a great deal of caution.

In addition, Esmaeil Baqaei, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, acknowledged the support of Italy and Oman for co-hosting these crucial talks. He expressed gratitude in a post, stating: “We remain committed to the cause of dialogue & diplomacy as our world continues to face unprecedented challenges and threats to the rule of law and common human values.”

The Rome discussions were a continuation of previous negotiations held in Muscat, Oman, where the Iranian team was led by Araqchi, while the U.S. delegation was headed by Steve Witkoff, a notable figure in the Trump administration.

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan have recognized Türkiye as an “occupying power” in Cyprus, a significant diplomatic development reported by Daily Tukik. This decision, made at the EU-Central Asia summit in Samarkand, aligns with UN Security Council Resolutions 541 and 550, which condemn the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Central Asian nations are strengthening ties with Cyprus by opening embassies, contrary to Turkish Cypriot expectations. The declaration underscores a commitment to international law and sovereignty, challenging Turkey’s efforts within the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) to gain recognition for Northern Cyprus amidst ongoing UN negotiations.
