He emphasized that the European Union has failed to facilitate a resolution to the conflict since 2014, when Russia initially annexed the Crimean Peninsula and supported separatist movements in eastern Ukraine.

The U.S. government has maintained that both Russia and Ukraine must make concessions if there is any hope for ceasefire negotiations. However, Lavrov firmly stated that Russia would not entertain any compromises regarding the Ukrainian territories seized during years of conflict. He asserted:

“There could not even be a ‘thought’ of that during negotiations.”
