Iran’s Tourism Boom: $7.4 Billion Revenue Surge from Foreign Visitors in the Last Year

In a remarkable boost to its economy, Iran’s tourism industry generated approximately $7.4 billion from foreign tourism during the last Iranian calendar year, which concluded in March 2025. This surge in tourism saw more than 7 million international visitors exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Islamic Republic.

On Thursday, Seyyed Reza Salehi-Amiri, the Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts, shared key insights regarding the economic impact of tourism in Iran. He highlighted that each foreign tourist typically spends between $1,000 and $3,000 during their stay.

“According to global assessments, the average revenue per tourist is around $1,019. In Iran, this figure is estimated at about $1,000, while in the Persian Gulf region it reaches $2,000,” Salehi-Amiri stated, emphasizing the country’s competitive tourism landscape.

He further noted that revenues from health tourism are even more significant, with each medical tourist spending as much as $3,000. This highlights a growing sector within the tourism industry that could attract more visitors seeking medical services.

According to data from Iran’s Law Enforcement Command (FARAJA), a total of 7.399 million foreign visitors entered the country last year. The combined spending of these tourists resulted in a substantial revenue of $7.4 billion, underscoring the tourism sector’s immense potential to bolster economic development in Iran.

Salehi-Amiri also pointed out that most foreign tourists visiting Iran originate from neighboring countries. This trend indicates a strong regional interest in Iran as a travel destination.
