In a remarkable boost to its economy, Iran’s tourism industry generated approximately $7.4 billion from foreign tourism during the last Iranian calendar year, which concluded in March 2025. This surge in tourism saw more than 7 million international visitors exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Islamic Republic.

On Thursday, Seyyed Reza Salehi-Amiri, the Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts, shared key insights regarding the economic impact of tourism in Iran. He highlighted that each foreign tourist typically spends between $1,000 and $3,000 during their stay.

“According to global assessments, the average revenue per tourist is around $1,019. In Iran, this figure is estimated at about $1,000, while in the Persian Gulf region it reaches $2,000,” Salehi-Amiri stated, emphasizing the country’s competitive tourism landscape.

He further noted that revenues from health tourism are even more significant, with each medical tourist spending as much as $3,000. This highlights a growing sector within the tourism industry that could attract more visitors seeking medical services.

According to data from Iran’s Law Enforcement Command (FARAJA), a total of 7.399 million foreign visitors entered the country last year. The combined spending of these tourists resulted in a substantial revenue of $7.4 billion, underscoring the tourism sector’s immense potential to bolster economic development in Iran.

Salehi-Amiri also pointed out that most foreign tourists visiting Iran originate from neighboring countries. This trend indicates a strong regional interest in Iran as a travel destination.

The Islamic Republic is poised to capitalize on its diverse range of tourist attractions, which include:

  • Bazaars
  • Museums
  • Mosques
  • Bridges
  • Bathhouses
  • Madrasas
  • Mausoleums
  • Churches

Among these attractions, an impressive 28 sites are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, further enhancing Iran’s appeal as a tourist destination. These sites not only showcase the historical and cultural richness of the country but also serve as vital components in attracting international visitors.

As the Iranian government focuses on enhancing the tourism infrastructure, it aims to improve the overall experience for tourists. This includes developing better transportation systems, increasing the availability of accommodations, and providing more comprehensive services to meet the needs of diverse visitors.

The potential for growth in the tourism sector is significant. With a combination of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and hospitable locals, Iran is well-positioned to attract even more visitors in the coming years.

In conclusion, the impressive revenue generated from foreign tourism reflects the growing interest in Iran as a travel destination. With continuous efforts to improve the tourism sector and promote its rich cultural heritage, Iran is set to reap the benefits of international tourism, supporting its broader economic goals.
