Iran’s Foreign Minister Calls on UN Chief to Demand Accountability for Aggressors

In a significant diplomatic meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the military assaults perpetrated by the Israeli regime and the United States against Iran’s sovereignty and its peaceful nuclear facilities. This incident occurred amidst ongoing diplomatic negotiations, marking a critical juncture in international relations. Araghchi labeled the attacks as a “gross violation of international law and the UN Charter, as well as a betrayal of diplomacy,” emphasizing the necessity for accountability for the aggressors.

On June 13, a blatant act of aggression was launched by Israel against Iran, which escalated into a 12-day conflict that resulted in the tragic loss of at least 1,064 lives within the country. This number included military leaders, nuclear scientists, and ordinary civilians, highlighting the severe human toll of the conflict.

Furthermore, the United States escalated the situation by bombing three Iranian nuclear sites, an action described as a serious breach of international law. This military involvement exacerbated tensions in an already volatile region.

In retaliation, the Iranian Armed Forces responded decisively, targeting strategic locations across the occupied territories as well as the Al-Udeid air base in Qatar, which is recognized as the largest American military installation in West Asia. Through effective military operations, Iran successfully imposed a halt to the aggression on June 24.

In addition to addressing the military actions, Araghchi also criticized the United States and three European nations for misusing the snapback mechanism to revive expired UN Security Council resolutions against Iran. He described this attempt as “unfounded and illegal,” emphasizing that it represents a severe blow to diplomacy and highlights the lack of good faith exhibited by these nations.

Reaffirming Iran’s stance, Araghchi stated that according to Resolution 2231, all restrictions related to Iran’s nuclear program are scheduled to expire on October 18, 2025. He also condemned the repeated violations of the UN headquarters agreement by the US, particularly regarding restrictions placed on Iranian diplomats. Araghchi urged the UN Secretary-General to take suitable actions to address these violations.

In response to the ongoing tensions, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the importance of adhering to diplomatic resolutions in resolving international disputes. He reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to assisting in these efforts and stressed the obligation of host countries to fulfill their treaty commitments, avoiding unlawful restrictions on the delegations of member states.

Iran has consistently opposed Western attempts to invoke the so-called “snapback” sanctions mechanism, asserting that Resolution 2231 effectively terminated all prior UN sanctions in 2015. The Iranian government argues that the European trio, similar to the US, has violated the nuclear agreement through continued non-compliance and support for Israeli and American hostilities.

Iranian officials maintain that the nation will staunchly defend its sovereignty and nuclear rights while simultaneously engaging with international institutions to expose the unlawful measures imposed by adversarial countries.

In conclusion, the recent military actions and diplomatic exchanges underscore the complexity of international relations in the region. As the situation continues to evolve, the emphasis on diplomatic resolutions remains critical for maintaining stability and peace. The Iranian government’s firm stance on its rights and sovereignty highlights the ongoing tensions and the need for constructive dialogue among nations.
