Trust Erosion: Lessons from the JCPOA Experience Shape Global Perceptions of the US

Iran Stands Firm: No Negotiations Amid Maximum Pressure Tactics

In a recent interview with Iran’s al-Alam television network, the Iranian top diplomat emphasized the significance of actions over mere words, particularly in the context of the newly signed memorandum by former US President Donald Trump. This document reinstates a stringent “maximum pressure” policy against Iran, which had initially begun during Trump’s first term in office.

The maximum pressure policy involves the United States withdrawing from a multi-party nuclear agreement, previously endorsed by the United Nations. As a result, the US not only reinstated sanctions that had been lifted but also introduced additional illegal economic restrictions targeting the Islamic Republic.

According to the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, the directives provided to various US ministries concerning the exertion of “maximum pressure” are unequivocal. He stated, “This is what has been documented, signed, and will be the benchmark for their (the Americans’) actions.”

Araghchi further asserted that Iran has consistently resisted yielding to threats, emphasizing that the country has never responded to pressure with concessions. He noted, “The ‘maximum pressure’ has never worked when it comes to Iran… The resolutions and sanctions against Iran have not been effective,” as reported by PressTV.

In response to the economic pressure applied by the United States, Iran is adapting its strategies by:

  • Diversifying its economic and trade partnerships
  • Exploring alternative methods to circumvent sanctions
  • Revitalizing domestic production
  • Strengthening cooperation with key allies, particularly Russia and China

Araghchi criticized the US for what he described as empty rhetoric, seemingly referencing Washington’s claims of an interest in negotiating with Iran and its threats of potential military action against the nation. He warned that Tehran would not be misled by superficial statements, declaring, “So far, we have not seen anything except some hollow threats of military attacks, which even they, themselves, know have no basis. We have not seen anything else except the signed document, which clearly outlines their policy.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister emphasized the nation’s resilience and unwavering commitment to defend its sovereignty and dignity. He remarked, “The Iranian nation has always defended its honor and dignity with determination.” However, he also indicated that if the US chose to address Iran with “respect and dignity,” the response would be reciprocal.

Reiterating Iran’s stance, Araghchi stated, “Iran will not engage in any negotiations under maximum pressure and threats,” adding that the nation would adapt according to US policies.

In a separate discussion, Araghchi mentioned an upcoming visit by Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Tehran. He noted that this visit is part of ongoing political exchanges between the two nations. When asked if the Qatari leader would carry any messages for Iran from the United States or other foreign entities, Araghchi clarified that the Islamic Republic was not aware of any such communications from a third party.

This situation underscores the complexities of international relations and the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. As Iran continues to navigate these challenges, it remains steadfast in its commitment to defend its national interests and sovereignty.
