Iran Seeks Positive Engagement with EU, Says Araghchi

In recent developments, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has expressed optimism regarding the potential for constructive interactions between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the European Union. This dialogue comes amid ongoing efforts to enhance bilateral relations and address regional and international challenges.

During a late-night telephone conversation on Wednesday, Araghchi spoke with his Polish counterpart, Radoslaw Sikorski, covering a range of important topics, including:

  • Bilateral relations between Iran and Poland
  • Regional issues impacting both nations
  • International concerns relevant to the European Union

Araghchi congratulated Poland on assuming the six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, expressing his hope for improved cooperation between Iran and the EU during this leadership period. He also highlighted the ongoing discussions between Iran and the three European countries known as the E3. Araghchi stressed that:

  • Iran has adopted a dialogue-based and interactive approach to resolving issues.
  • Iran is fully prepared for any potential scenarios that may arise.

Sikorski, in response, underscored the importance of the longstanding diplomatic relations between Iran and Poland, which span over half a century. He also expressed his hope that critical issues, including those related to nuclear matters, could be resolved amicably between Iran and the European Union.

In a separate conversation with British Foreign Minister David Lammy, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s commitment to peaceful nuclear activities, emphasizing the nation’s openness to dialogue based on its national interests. He stated, “This is not a new approach, and negotiations have taken place on this basis in the past.”

Furthermore, Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s support for ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon, highlighting the urgent need to address what he termed Israel’s crimes. He emphasized that:

  • The Islamic Republic has consistently championed peace and stability in the region.
  • Iran will exert every effort to achieve these goals.

He also cautioned against escalating tensions in Yemen, viewing British-American military actions as a significant threat to regional stability and security. Both sides agreed that diplomatic consultations should persist and addressed various consular issues during their telephone conversation.
