Iran and FAO Launch Workshops to Boost Pistachio Safety and Export Opportunities

In an effort to enhance pistachio production and bolster export potential, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has launched an innovative project in Iran. This initiative, titled “Improving Pistachio Production and Export through Establishment of Integrated Product Management,” aims to address critical issues in the pistachio supply chain, ensuring safety and quality for this vital crop.

From January 26 to February 5, a series of workshops were conducted, under the leadership of Paola Battilani, FAO’s International Pistachio Value Chain and Processing Consultant. These sessions were designed to develop and implement comprehensive mycotoxin management plans, essential for ensuring safer crop production. The official announcement regarding the workshops was made in a press release on March 24.

The workshops brought together approximately 60 national stakeholders, including government representatives, private sector participants such as pistachio growers, processors, traders, and academia. This collaboration aimed to enhance the capacity for mycotoxin prevention, detection, and control throughout the pistachio supply chain. Participants were equipped with vital tools and strategies to improve pistachio quality and enhance competitiveness in the global market.

As one of the leading producers and exporters of high-quality pistachios, Iran’s pistachio industry is instrumental to the country’s economy and the international nut trade. The significance of this sector cannot be overstated, as it contributes to job creation and income generation for many families across the nation.

Globally, aflatoxins—produced by Aspergillus fungi—can emerge at various stages of the pistachio supply chain, influenced by environmental conditions, agricultural practices, and post-harvest handling methods. To combat these challenges, Iran is implementing a range of initiatives:

  • Adopting good agricultural practices (GAPs)
  • Applying strict quality control mechanisms
  • Improving drying and storage methods
  • Enhancing mycotoxin testing capabilities
  • Utilizing biological control solutions

The FAO-led workshops served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and technical capacity building. Participants gained insights into the latest scientific findings and risk mitigation strategies relevant to the pistachio industry.

During a signing ceremony on July 23, Yuak Dhoj G C, the FAO Representative ad interim to Iran, and Mohammad Mehdi Boroumandi, Deputy Agriculture Minister for Horticulture, formalized their agreement to implement the Pistachio Technical Cooperation Project (TCP).

Pistachios are not only a cherished crop in Iran but have also gained international acclaim for their exceptional quality and flavor. The TCP project aims to strengthen this essential sector by:

  • Improving production efficiency
  • Ensuring sustainable farming practices
  • Enhancing quality control mechanisms
