Iran and Afghanistan: A Vital Link for Regional Security and Stability, Says Araghchi

In recent discussions, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized the vital link between Iran’s security and stability and that of Afghanistan, advocating for enhanced cooperation between Tehran and Kabul to address ongoing bilateral challenges.

During a meeting with Mohammad Hasan Akhund, the acting Prime Minister of Afghanistan, in Kabul on Sunday, Araghchi stated:

“We are happy that after four decades, overall security has been established in Afghanistan, and acceptance of diplomats at a high level and the maintenance of relations show that Iran has strong relations with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”

Araghchi further remarked:

“Iran’s security and stability depend on Afghanistan’s security and stability, and the recent developments in Afghanistan have led us to conclude that cooperation with the Islamic Emirate should be further expanded.”

One of the critical topics discussed was the ongoing water dispute between the two neighboring countries. Araghchi highlighted:

“Iran demands that the terms of the Helmand River Treaty of 1973 be fully implemented.”

This treaty stipulates that Afghanistan must allow the flow of water from the Helmand River into Iran, a provision that has not been fully honored. Iran’s water share has diminished significantly due to factors such as:

  • Excessive irrigation practices in Afghanistan
  • Construction of dams that restrict water flow

Araghchi stressed the need for closer collaboration between Tehran and Kabul to tackle the water issue and manage the increasing number of Afghan refugees in Iran. He also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to facilitating the return of illegal Afghan refugees.

The Afghan leader reciprocated the sentiment by urging for more visits between officials to strengthen diplomatic, political, and economic relations between the two nations.

Araghchi’s visit to Kabul marks his first official trip to Afghanistan since his appointment as Iran’s foreign minister. He was accompanied by a team of economic experts to discuss further cooperation.

This meeting underscores the importance of fostering strong ties between Iran and Afghanistan to ensure mutual security and prosperity.
