INSF and NSFC Join Forces to Launch 10 Innovative Joint Research Projects

In a significant development for international research collaboration, Iran and China are set to support the implementation of ten out of 136 research projects proposed following their fourth joint call. These projects focus on critical areas such as energy, regenerative medicine, and environmental management.

The partnership between the Iran National Science Foundation (INSF) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) highlights a commitment to advancing scientific research across diverse fields. Here’s an overview of what these initiatives entail:

  • Energy: Focusing on renewable energy sources and efficient energy production.
  • Regenerative Medicine: Researching bioengineering and materials aimed at medical advancements.
  • Environmental Management: Addressing challenges related to water treatment and solid waste management.

In addition to these projects, three out of 21 joint workshops have been approved. These workshops will cover vital topics, including:

  1. Climate change
  2. Artificial intelligence
  3. Big data applications in industrial engineering and materials science

The proposals were rigorously evaluated by specialized working groups from both countries before being presented to an international committee. The results were subsequently shared with the Chinese Academy of Sciences to ensure a thorough review process.

Strengthening Iran-China Energy Cooperation

On January 11, the Chinese Ambassador to Iran, Cong Peiwu, highlighted the immense potential of Khuzestan Province in the realm of renewable energy, particularly solar power. During a meeting with the Governor of Khuzestan in Ahvaz, Cong expressed enthusiasm for collaborating on the province’s energy capabilities. He stated, “I hope this visit fosters deeper connections between Khuzestan and China.”

Cong emphasized the long-standing cultural and historical ties between Iran and China, comparing them to the ever-flowing Karun River. He noted that these bilateral exchanges serve as vital bridges of cooperation, much like Ahvaz’s iconic White and Black Bridge.

Highlighting the region’s resources in both traditional and emerging industries, he pointed out that Khuzestan’s potential in the green economy presents significant opportunities for collaboration.

Environmental Cooperation Initiatives

In June 2024, a delegation led by Wan Gang, the Chinese Minister of Science and Technology, met with Ali Salajeqeh, the former head of the Department of Environment, in Tehran. This meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration under the 25-year cooperation agreement signed by Iran and China in March 2021.

During their discussions, both sides expressed readiness to implement joint environmental projects targeting critical issues such as:

  • Sand and dust storms
  • Desertification
  • Air pollution
  • Climate change

Salajeqeh remarked, “Climate change is one of the major issues that concerns the whole world. Iran and China can address this global challenge through joint cooperation.” He further noted the impact of sand and dust storms on Middle Eastern countries, emphasizing China’s familiarity with this phenomenon.

“Fortunately, in the last three years, we have managed to establish regional and international cooperation, in which China has also actively participated. Moreover, the resolution proposed by Iran on combating sand and dust storms was adopted by consensus at the United Nations. July 12 has been recognized globally as the ‘International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms’,” he added.

Addressing the issue of sea-oriented development, Salajeqeh mentioned that this area of cooperation is aligned with sustainable development principles. He outlined that sea-oriented development includes:

  • Sustainable use of marine resources
  • Expansion of transportation and shipping capacities
  • Development of maritime trade
  • Establishment of coastal industries

As Iran and China deepen their collaboration in research, energy, and environmental management, these initiatives are poised to foster significant advancements and address pressing global challenges.

With a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability, both nations are paving the way for a more cooperative future that benefits not only their countries but the wider global community.

  • Khamenei Leverages Military Power to Ensure Food Security During Escalating Economic Crisis

Iran is grappling with a severe crisis marked by rising poverty and hunger, prompting Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to urge the government, led by Masoud Pezeshkian, to ensure food security. In a troubling response, Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref has enlisted the military, specifically the Etka Organization, to manage food supply, indicating a shift towards militarizing public sustenance. This comes as agricultural systems collapse due to resource degradation, leading to increased malnutrition and food insecurity. Officials admit that nearly 20 million Iranians lack basic necessities, while inflation and food costs soar, reflecting the regime’s failure to address structural economic issues.
