Hamas Slams PA’s UN Statement: Tensions Rise in Palestinian Leadership

In a recent statement, Hamas emphasized that resistance is an inherent right of the Palestinian people who are enduring genocide and crimes against humanity. This declaration comes in response to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s address to the UN General Assembly, where he criticized Hamas’s actions and its role in Palestinian governance.

During his speech, which he delivered via video link from Ramallah due to a visa denial by the United States, Abbas condemned Hamas for its actions on October 7, 2023. He stated that taking captives does not represent the Palestinian people and insisted that Hamas should not have any role in the governance of Palestine. Furthermore, Abbas demanded that Hamas and other factions surrender their weapons as part of a state-building initiative.

In their response, Hamas outlined several critical points regarding the ongoing situation:

  • Resistance is a National Responsibility: Hamas asserted that resistance against occupation is both a national and moral duty, legitimized by the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and recognized by international laws and conventions.
  • Refuting False Narratives: The movement accused Abbas of perpetuating the “false narrative” of the Zionist regime by blaming the resistance for civilian casualties.
  • Violation of Self-Determination: According to Hamas, Abbas’s statement regarding Hamas’s lack of governance role is a blatant infringement on the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and leadership choices.
  • Commitment to Resistance: Hamas reiterated that as long as Israeli occupation persists, there can be no compromise on the issue of resistance weapons, particularly in light of the ongoing genocide faced by Gazans.
  • Urgency for National Unity: The statement concluded that achieving national unity and a comprehensive resistance strategy is vital to countering the occupation’s goals, which include genocide, displacement, and the Judaization of al-Quds (Jerusalem) and al-Aqsa Mosque.

Hamas believes that this approach is essential to fulfilling the Palestinian aspirations for freedom and establishing an independent state with al-Quds as its capital.

Additionally, on September 26, coinciding with the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Journalists, Hamas issued a statement condemning the Israeli killing of 251 journalists in Gaza. They highlighted that these actions would not silence the truth and characterized the regime’s assault on Palestinian media as a “heinous crime” that blatantly violates international laws and norms.

In the meantime, Israeli occupation forces (IOF) have intensified their attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip, particularly in the urban neighborhoods of northern Gaza City, resulting in numerous civilian casualties, including children seeking assistance. The relentless bombardment has led to the destruction of residential buildings as IOF warplanes, drones, and tank fire create pathways for ground forces to reoccupy the city center.

Palestinian resistance groups continue to engage in operations against IOF ground forces, leading to increasing casualties among the occupation regime’s soldiers. The ongoing conflict raises significant concerns about humanitarian conditions in Gaza and the broader implications for peace in the region.
