Escalating Gaza Crisis: The Impact of a Harsh Blockade

Israel’s ongoing blockade of Gaza represents a significant breach of international law and constitutes a form of continuous collective punishment against the Palestinian people. Despite the fragile ceasefire, the Israeli occupation regime is deliberately limiting aid to Gaza, maintaining the closure of the Rafah border crossing, and subjecting civilians to severe deprivation.

Officials from the United Nations have raised alarms about this intentional strategy, which not only breaches the terms of the truce but also violates international law, leading to a humanitarian disaster that impacts every facet of life in Gaza. This situation has escalated after two years of a U.S.-backed war, which has been characterized by severe violence and devastation.

According to Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Israel has not allowed a single day of entry for 600 UN aid trucks into Gaza since the ceasefire’s commencement. “We want the Israeli authorities to allow in more trucks at more crossing points; we’ve made that clear,” Haq stated.

However, the blockade continues to restrict access, leaving more than 2.2 million Palestinians trapped in increasingly dire conditions. Recent footage from Reuters highlights Israeli settlers obstructing aid trucks at the Karem Abu Salem crossing, an Israeli military-controlled gateway where only minimal aid—described as “a drop in the ocean”—is permitted to enter.

Currently, the Rafah crossing, which serves as Gaza’s primary link to Egypt and the broader world, remains shut by the Israeli regime. This closure prevents the entry of essential medical supplies, food, and fuel, and hinders critically ill patients from seeking treatment outside Gaza. The truce agreement initially included provisions for the Rafah crossing to be fully operational in its first phase.

Humanitarian organizations emphasize that these restrictions equate to collective punishment and violate international law. The repercussions are severe:

  • Hospitals operate with minimal power and dwindling supplies, leading to surgeries performed without anesthesia and unsafe sterilization of instruments.
  • Overcrowded shelters and failing sanitation systems have led to outbreaks of diseases, including respiratory infections, exacerbated by the use of white phosphorus bombs by Israeli forces.
  • The World Health Organization has warned that Gaza’s health system is “on the verge of total collapse.”

In northern Gaza, conditions of famine are prevalent, with starvation already leading to fatalities and thousands more at risk as aid remains obstructed. Limited deliveries hinder the transport of critical items such as flour and infant formula. Experts estimate that more than 1,000 trucks are needed daily to meet urgent needs, significantly exceeding pre-war averages.

Moreover, the blockade is crippling various sectors of Gaza society:

  • Schools and universities are closed or severely damaged, depriving children of education and social development.
  • Water and sanitation systems are faltering due to blocked fuel and repair materials, increasing disease risks.
  • Electricity shortages are impacting hospitals, water pumps, refrigeration, and heating as winter approaches.

On a recent Friday, at least two children suffered severe injuries from unexploded munitions in northern Gaza City. The blockade has also devastated the local economy, causing soaring prices for basic food items, while families struggle to survive. Critical sectors like agriculture and fishing, essential for food security in Gaza, remain paralyzed.

Human rights advocates argue that the occupation regime’s actions are intentional, violating the truce and international law, including prohibitions against collective punishment. By controlling aid access, the Israeli regime is subjecting the population of Gaza to extreme deprivation and suffering, obstructing any potential recovery.

Living conditions in southern Gaza are equally appalling, as reported by Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The organization highlighted that widespread displacement, combined with the destruction of civilian infrastructure and the health system by Israeli forces, has created a “perfect storm” for disease and illness.

MSF emphasized, “Israeli authorities should immediately allow a massive scale-up of humanitarian assistance to flow freely into Gaza,” noting that the regime’s “two-year-long genocidal campaign” has left Palestinians “traumatized, injured, and dangerously exposed to the elements as winter approaches.”

The organization further warned that without urgent improvements in water, sanitation, shelter, and nutrition, more lives will be lost to preventable causes.

The ongoing Israeli blockade poses a grave threat not only to the immediate survival of a population where over half are children but also to the long-term recovery and dignity of the Palestinian people.
