Empowering Young Environmental Champions: Elementary Schools to Launch Eco-Helper Training Program

TEHRAN – Education plays a pivotal role in enhancing environmental protection, and the Department of Environment (DOE) is set to launch a national initiative aimed at cultivating eco-friendly students, referred to as ‘environmental helpers’. This project is slated to be implemented in 20 percent of elementary schools nationwide, commencing at the start of the new academic year on September 23, according to an official from the DOE.

The primary goal of this initiative is to identify students who are passionate about environmental issues and encourage their active participation in a dedicated working group that focuses on various environmental subjects. As reported by IRNA, Mohammad Medadi emphasized that these engaged students will subsequently train their peers to enhance their environmental awareness.

Over the next five years, the initiative is expected to expand its reach to encompass all schools across the country. Additionally, informal educational methods through extracurricular activities are set to be incorporated. This approach aims to develop a national environmental curriculum, which will serve as a roadmap for formal environmental education, ensuring relevant content is systematically included in educational programs.

To effectively instill eco-friendly behaviors, it is crucial to introduce environmental education at an early age—ideally during elementary or even preschool years. However, this endeavor is not without its challenges. As Medadi pointed out, education is a continuous journey; transient or short-term courses are unlikely to foster enduring behavioral changes. He noted that substantial time and effort are required to yield positive results.

Education: A Key to Change

In May, the DOE collaborated with the Ministry of Education to implement a noteworthy environmental project themed ‘education is the key to change’. This initiative aimed to:

  • Enhance environmental literacy among students
  • Foster a culture of environmental responsibility
  • Utilize peer educators to disseminate environmental knowledge
  • Change students’ attitudes towards environmental issues
  • Familiarize students with indigenous, climatic, and local features
  • Encourage student participation as eco-friendly individuals in raising environmental awareness at school and home

In March, Shina Ansari, head of the DOE, asserted that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility, with national policy documents highlighting the importance of environmental education. Ansari stressed the urgency of focusing on education to address current environmental challenges.

The DOE, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, is dedicated to nurturing eco-friendly students throughout the country to shift their perspectives on environmental matters. Education Minister Alireza Kazemi remarked that the ministry intends to integrate environmental awareness into both formal and informal curricula.

“Today, the world faces numerous threats. If we do not take action, humanity risks facing dire consequences, leaving us with little for the future,” he warned. Kazemi identified the environmental crisis as one of the most pressing challenges confronting humanity, emphasizing that environmental degradation leads to irreversible impacts, necessitating proactive solutions.

He further elaborated that educating students about environmental issues, raising their awareness, and promoting a culture of conservation are vital strategies for tackling these challenges. By instilling a sense of responsibility towards the environment in the younger generation, the initiative seeks to cultivate a more sustainable future.

In conclusion, the DOE’s initiative to train eco-friendly students marks a significant step towards enhancing environmental education in schools. As this project unfolds, it is anticipated to create a lasting impact on the way future generations engage with and protect their environment.

Through concerted efforts in education and community involvement, the hope is to foster a generation of environmentally conscious individuals who are equipped to tackle the pressing environmental challenges of today and tomorrow.
