China’s PLA at 98: Strengthening Global Peace and Security as a Crucial Force

As the world grapples with rising geopolitical tensions and evolving power dynamics, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) emerges as a key player in fostering international peace and stability. Established in 1927, the PLA has not only fortified China’s national defense but has also transcended its borders to become a global force committed to promoting development and multilateral cooperation.

The PLA’s Role in World Peace

During a distinguished reception at the Chinese Embassy in Tehran, which marked the 98th anniversary of the PLA, the army’s dual role as both a guardian of China and a contributor to global security was highlighted. Senior Iranian officials, foreign diplomats, and military attachés gathered to celebrate this significant milestone.

In an interview with the Tehran Times, Chinese Ambassador to Iran, Cong Peiwu, reflected on the PLA’s remarkable growth and expanding international engagement. He stated, “After 98 years, the PLA has made great progress and also made great achievements in safeguarding the national security.”

Ambassador Cong emphasized that the PLA’s responsibilities have evolved beyond mere national defense: “It’s now not only confined to the national security, but it’s also expanding its influence worldwide to safeguard regional and world peace.” He noted the participation of over 50,000 Chinese peacekeeping soldiers in global missions over the past three decades, underscoring their significant contributions, especially in Africa and beyond.

He credited President Xi Jinping for this broader vision, stating, “The PLA is making extra efforts in making sure that it’s not only safeguarding the national security of China, but also we will have even more positive role in promoting regional and world peace.”

A Commitment to International Cooperation

The PLA’s 98th anniversary in Tehran served as a platform to showcase China’s commitment to multilateralism and peaceful development. The presence of foreign diplomats, military officials, and Iranian dignitaries underscored the PLA’s role in enhancing bilateral military ties and regional stability.

This year’s celebrations are particularly significant as they coincide with several important anniversaries, including the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the founding of the United Nations, and the 35th anniversary of China’s active participation in UN peacekeeping operations. These milestones reinforce the PLA’s global relevance.

In alignment with these commitments, Yin Zhongliang, China’s military adviser to the United Nations, affirmed Beijing’s vision for a safer world during a recent ceremony. He reiterated China’s dedication to the Global Security Initiative (GSI), which aims to tackle rising security challenges through multilateral cooperation and shared responsibilities.

  • The GSI aims to enhance security through collaboration.
  • China will increase its support for UN peacekeeping missions.
  • The initiative seeks to instill confidence and hope in global peace efforts.

Modernization and Global Contributions of the PLA

Professor Hongda Fan from the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University shared insights into the ongoing transformation of the PLA in an exclusive interview. He noted, “The history of the PLA dates back to the Nanchang Uprising on August 1, 1927, which is commemorated as Army Day or PLA Day.”

Fan summarized the PLA’s role in historical conflicts, stating, “Since the founding of the PRC, the PLA has fought to protect national interests, participating in the Korean War, the 1962 Sino-Indian Border War, and the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War. The PLA has never proactively initiated war against other nations.”

He also highlighted the PLA’s peace-time contributions: “During nearly half a century of peace, the PLA has actively participated in national emergency disaster relief efforts and other activities closely linked to the welfare of the Chinese people.”

Turning to recent developments, Fan discussed China’s military modernization: “In recent years, China has vigorously promoted military modernization, strengthening the PLA’s combat and defense capabilities, particularly in areas like fighter jets and ballistic missiles.”

He observed that these advancements have led to significant improvements in the PLA’s operational effectiveness: “Supported by advanced management systems and sophisticated weapons, the PLA’s combat effectiveness has seen significant improvements, making it a strong guarantee for national security and unity.”

A Vision for the Future

As the PLA approaches its centennial in 2027, it is increasingly recognized not only for its military strength but also for its constructive contributions to global governance, peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, and international cooperation. The PLA’s role extends from responding to natural disasters and pandemics to leading UN missions, embodying a vision of military diplomacy rooted in peace, stability, and shared development.

The recent reception in Tehran served as a reaffirmation of a future where the PLA seeks partnership over dominance and cooperation over confrontation, highlighting its commitment to fostering a safer and more stable world.

  • Trapped in the Ordinary: A Haunting Tale of the Banality of Evil

In October 2023, the tragic death of Saleh Al-Jaafrawi, a 27-year-old freelance journalist in Gaza, exemplified the “banality of evil,” as systemic violence against those documenting war becomes routine.
