Ammar Festival Officials and Family Raise Alarm Over Esfandiari's Extended Detention

Ammar Festival Officials and Family Raise Alarm Over Esfandiari’s Extended Detention

On Tuesday night, officials from the 16th edition of the Ammar Popular Film Festival gathered to express their concerns regarding the detention of Mahdieh Esfandiari, a translator and cultural activist currently held in France. This meeting highlighted the ongoing challenges she faces, as well as the skewed representation of her situation in Western media.

The delegation included notable figures such as Esmaeil Heshemabadi, Deputy of the Cultural and Artistic Institute of the Islamic Revolution Cultural Front; Marzieh Hashemi, the Secretary of the 16th Ammar Popular Film Festival; and Mohammad Hossein Sabouri, the festival’s executive secretary.

Mahdieh Esfandiari, a 39-year-old academic at Lyon’s Lumière University, has been detained in France since February 28. Her detention stems from social media posts that express support for Palestine. Despite the passage of several months, she remains in temporary custody without specific charges being filed against her. The judicial process surrounding her case has been characterized by ongoing delays and uncertainty.

During the visit, her family emphasized that Mahdieh has committed no illegal acts under French law. They outlined her activities as primarily educational and cultural, conducted in compliance with all regulations. The materials she shared were largely translations and reposted news articles, relevant to her academic pursuits and cultural initiatives.

Her family also raised concerns about the portrayal of Mahdieh in Western media. They argued that these outlets have attempted to distort her story and misrepresent her cultural activities. The family noted that Mahdieh is not someone who seeks public recognition; her focus has been on advocating for Palestine.

Mohammad Hossein Sabouri remarked on the implications of Esfandiari’s arrest, suggesting that her cultural work has even raised alarms among Western governments. He emphasized the influential nature of her activities, which seem to challenge the status quo.

Marzieh Hashemi addressed the current sensitive political and social climate, indicating that various actions against Western governments are contributing to a peak in political tensions. She noted that some university professors in Western countries have actively participated in protests and shared their views online, facing repercussions for their actions.

“The heightened awareness among public opinion and the initiation of social activism have caused widespread anxiety, signaling a wave of political awakening both regionally and globally,” Hashemi stated. She expressed optimism that Mahdieh Esfandiari would soon be released and be able to participate in the 16th Ammar Film Festival.

Esfandiari has resided in France for eight years, working as a translator. She was detained due to allegations concerning her social media activity. The investigation, initiated by the Paris Prosecutor’s Office in November 2024, scrutinized several active accounts on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Prosecutors claimed these accounts incited terrorism and disseminated hate speech based on religion and ethnicity. Notably, these accounts gained attention shortly after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Gaza.

For weeks, Mahdieh’s family was unaware of her whereabouts, prompting them to inform Iranian authorities about her situation. Eventually, the Iranian government confirmed her detention by French police, although details about her case remained sparse. French authorities only provided limited information regarding her legal status, raising international concerns and prompting diplomatic efforts on her behalf.

The Ammar Popular Film Festival, established in 2010 by a group of Iranian revolutionary figures, aims to honor film and art that promotes themes of resistance and revolution. The festival is named after Ammar Yasir, a close companion of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

In conclusion, the situation surrounding Mahdieh Esfandiari continues to evolve, with her family and supporters advocating for her release and highlighting the need for fair representation in the media. As the world watches, the implications of her case extend beyond her individual circumstances, touching on larger issues of freedom of expression and cultural activism.
