Oman Strengthens Ties with Iran to Combat Narcotics Trafficking

In a significant move towards enhancing international collaboration in drug enforcement, Mohammed bin Saleh Al Gheilani, the General Director of Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of Oman, has proposed signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran. This initiative aims to strengthen cooperation in the fight against drugs and narcotics, highlighting the longstanding and amicable relations between the two nations.

During a recent meeting in Tehran with Iraj Kakavand, Iran’s anti-narcotics police chief, Al Gheilani expressed optimism about leveraging Iran’s expertise in anti-narcotics operations. He stated, “We are optimistic to boost bilateral interactions and cooperation in the targeted fight against drug trafficking,” as reported by ILNA.

Kakavand echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of enhancing regional and global cooperation in the ongoing battle against drugs. “Based on the shared global responsibility, Iran has always prioritized the fight against illicit drugs and drug trafficking,” he noted.

The call for enhanced cooperation comes at a time when the region is facing escalating challenges related to drug trafficking. The conference featured the participation of:

  • Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, Iraqi Minister of Interior
  • Anti-narcotics police chiefs from neighboring countries

During the discussions, Kakavand reiterated the critical need for regional cooperation, stating that addressing drug trafficking requires a concerted effort due to the extensive border issues faced in the region, as reported by IRNA.
