Mosimane Announces Departure from Esteghlal: What’s Next for the Coaching Star?
Veteran South African coach Pitso Mosimane has recently shared his insights on why he decided to part ways with the Iranian football club Esteghlal. This decision came after a challenging stint with the team, which has been struggling both domestically and on the continental stage. Mosimane’s experience and expertise were expected to bring stability to Esteghlal, but various factors ultimately led to the termination of his contract.

“A big team in Iran, a big team in Asia. We just played [AFC] Champions League with Cristiano Ronaldo’s team, we played with Neymar’s [former] team, we played with Riyad Mahrez’s team,” he stated. “For me as an African coach there is nothing bigger than that. You play with big teams, big coaches, who won [Copa] Libertadores, who won leagues. Everybody who is not in the Premier League is in that space.”
Despite the prestige associated with coaching Esteghlal, Mosimane felt compelled to terminate his contract to safeguard his reputation and the legacy he has built over 26 years in football.
“Unfortunately, it didn’t end very well because I had to terminate the contract because I had to protect the brand, I had to protect my name, I had to protect the 26 years I’ve put in football. We have to get paid for the job we’ve done. We’ve done well. Good club, and big vibe,” he added.
During his tenure, Mosimane assessed the situation at Esteghlal and described it as a challenging environment. He elaborated on the issues plaguing the club:

“You know when a big team like Man United is not doing well, but you can see that the structure is good, it’s looked after, you can still buy players and all that,” Mosimane said.
In contrast, he found that Esteghlal lacked the necessary resources and support to facilitate the changes he envisioned. This lack of backing ultimately became a significant hurdle in his coaching journey:
“But there we needed more than playing personnel, it will take time, but that’s why I went there, because I knew what I came for. But when you don’t find resources and back-up to do what you think you could do, then it becomes a problem,” Mosimane concluded.
As Mosimane moves on from Esteghlal, his experience serves as a reminder of the challenges coaches face when expectations outpace reality.
