Japan Invests in FAO-UNDP Initiative to Revitalize Lake Urmia’s Ecosystem
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a cooperation agreement, backed by Japan, to revitalize Lake Urmia in Iran, which has been severely drying since the early 2000s. This initiative, titled “Enhancing Restoration Activities in Lake Urmia through the Effective Use of Agricultural Water,” aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices and improve water resource management. The project seeks to enhance water efficiency, safeguard farmers’ livelihoods, and restore the lake’s ecosystem. Additionally, a related initiative will develop conservation systems for wetlands around Lake Urmia from 2024 to 2028.

The National Cartographic Center of Iran has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Russian Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre, and Cartography to enhance spatial data infrastructure (SDI). This partnership, formalized at the 16th International Economic Forum, aims to improve cooperation, share mapping technologies, and develop collaborative geomatics projects. The director general of Iran’s center previously proposed a BRICS SDI to advance geospatial technologies among member states. This collaboration highlights the importance of spatial data for sustainable development and decision-making, while modern geospatial technologies continue to play a crucial role in various applications across society.
