Iran Stands Firm: VP Affirms Support for Iraq’s Security and Sovereignty Defense

In a significant diplomatic move, Iran’s Vice-President for Strategic Affairs, Mohammad Javad Zarif, has expressed strong support for Iraq’s security and sovereignty. This commitment was reiterated during his meeting with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid in Baghdad.

During their discussion, Zarif emphasized the importance of Iran and Iraq in fostering regional stability. He stated, “Iran supports Iraq in defending its security, sovereignty, and independence,” as highlighted by a press release from the Iraqi president’s office.

  • Strengthening Ties: President Rashid expressed Iraq’s desire to enhance cooperation with Iran for mutual benefits.
  • Regional Issues: The leaders addressed important topics, including the situation in Palestine, reaffirming Iraq’s support for Palestinian self-determination.

Moreover, Zarif held discussions with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani. The two leaders underscored their commitment to deepening the Iran-Iraq relationship, focusing on:

  2. Implementing agreements made during recent bilateral visits.
  3. Consulting on regional developments to bolster stability.

In a separate meeting, Zarif engaged with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, who noted that increased delegation exchanges would enhance mutual ties. Al-Mashhadani also shared insights from his recent successful visit to Tehran.

Earlier on Thursday, Zarif met with Mohammed Al-Hassan, Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). Their discussions focused on:

  • Recent regional and international developments.
  • The ongoing situation in Iraq and Palestine.

Zarif highlighted the significance of stability and security in Iraq, emphasizing that both regional initiatives and UN support are vital for progress. He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to ongoing collaboration with UNAMI.

Zarif’s visit to Iraq, which took place at the official invitation of Seyyed Ammar al-Hakim, Leader of Iraq’s National Wisdom Movement, marks an important step towards strengthening bilateral relations.
