Tehran Unveils Eye-Catching Poster for the 19th Cinema Verite Festival

Get ready for an exciting celebration of documentary cinema as the 19th Iran International Documentary Film Festival, also known as “Cinema Verite,” is set to showcase a vibrant and innovative perspective inspired by Iranian culture. The highly anticipated poster for this year’s festival has just been unveiled, sparking enthusiasm among filmmakers and audiences alike.

The unveiling ceremony took place on Monday in Tehran and was reported by IRNA. Mohammad Hamidi Moghadam, the festival secretary, shared details about the artistic direction behind the poster. He stated: “Our consistent colors in recent years, after 2019 and following the artistic direction of Reza Abedini, have been green and orange; colors and designs that, over time, have become identifiers of Cinema Verite. This year, while preserving those colors and that identity, we sought to create a fresh visual atmosphere. The collaboration of Bahram Kalhornia helped shape this new space and move toward a new experience.”

Hamidi Moghadam emphasized the festival’s need for renewal, aiming to open new avenues for understanding documentary cinema. He remarked on the importance of collaboration with Master Bahram Kalhornia, stating that it has given the poster its unique identity.

At 73 years old, Bahram Kalhornia is a seasoned artist with a diverse background as a drawing artist, sculptor, graphic designer, painter, researcher, and educator. His extensive experience in the art world has significantly contributed to the festival’s artistic vision.

In discussing the festival’s lineup, Hamidi Moghadam noted the diversity of films and filmmakers participating this year. He mentioned: “In both the national and international sections this year, we have outstanding films in the lineup, and we will see works by major filmmakers on the screen. The national and international sections of this edition offer many attractions for documentary cinema enthusiasts.”

He also highlighted the documentary photo collection section, which will take place at the Iranian Artists Forum, noting its significant appeal. Furthermore, the student section has shown remarkable enthusiasm, indicating a strong interest in documentary filmmaking among the younger generation.

Siavash Yaghoubi, a member of the poster design team, shared insights into the design process. He said: “Despite the challenges, we tried to present a new transformation in the poster. Therefore, aside from the main poster, we also tried to offer something different in the posters for the various sections. For example, in the Iran section, we sought to present a symbol of Iran and referenced the 6th century and Nishapur pottery, unique to Iran and reminiscent of our civilization.”

Yaghoubi further explained that in the international poster, they drew inspiration from the works of Dutch artist M. C. Escher. He noted: “The Eastern orientation of his works carries special significance.” Escher’s creations are known for their mathematical themes and intricate designs, making them a fitting choice for a festival celebrating the art of documentary filmmaking.

Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a Dutch graphic artist renowned for his woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. His works often explore complex mathematical concepts and visual perspectives, featuring impossible objects, explorations of infinity, reflection, symmetry, and tessellations.

The Iran International Documentary Film Festival “Cinema Vérité” is proudly organized by the Documentary & Experimental Film Center (DEFC). Its mission is to express the intricate relationship between reality and truth through the powerful medium of documentary films.

Mark your calendars! The 19th edition of the festival is scheduled to take place from December 10 to 17 in Tehran, promising an enriching experience for all who attend.
