Strengthening Ties: Sudan and Iran Forge a Promising Partnership, Says Envoy

In recent months, the Republic of Sudan has been grappling with a sensitive and complex situation. This internal conflict, coupled with a widespread humanitarian crisis, has placed this significant African nation in one of the most challenging periods of its modern history. Given Sudan’s strategic location in the Horn of Africa and along the Red Sea coast, developments in this country are crucial not only for the Sudanese people but also for regional stability.

To gain insight into these pressing issues, Mehr News Agency interviewed Abdulaziz Hassan Saleh Taha, the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan in Tehran. The discussion delved into recent developments, the future outlook for Sudan, and the relationship between Tehran and Khartoum.

During the interview, Ambassador Taha criticized the silence of international organizations and Western nations regarding the crimes committed against Sudan. He stated that evidence of the UAE’s financial and military support for these groups had been formally submitted to the United Nations Security Council.

Current Conflict Zones in Sudan

Ambassador Taha highlighted the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), stating:

“As you know, this aggression against Sudan began on April 15, 2023. The rebel-terrorist force that rose up against the country’s legitimate authority sought not only to assassinate Sudanese figures but to target the identity, culture, values, and morals of the Sudanese nation.”

He further elaborated on the devastating impact of these conflicts:

  • Destruction of Cultural Heritage: The RSF has destroyed cultural centers, museums, universities, and mosques, along with committing gruesome acts against innocent worshippers.
  • Community Resistance: The people of Sudan have shown remarkable resilience, standing alongside their army and armed forces, to resist these terrorist forces.
  • Recent Atrocities: On October 26, 2023, the RSF entered Al Fashir after a two-year siege, committing numerous atrocities that were reported globally.

Unfortunately, these incidents have been largely met with silence from the international community. Ambassador Taha emphasized the need for independent media to expose the ongoing violence and to classify the RSF as a terrorist organization.

The Roots of the Conflict

When asked about the underlying causes of the political disagreements between the Sudanese army and the RSF, the Ambassador explained:

“What has happened in Sudan is not a political dispute between the army and this rebel group. Rather, it is a premeditated plan for a coup against the country’s legitimate government.”

He noted that the conflict has morphed into a full-scale war targeting the Sudanese people rather than just the government. The following points highlight the brutal nature of the conflict:

  1. Targeting Civilians: The war is characterized by attacks on defenseless civilians, including assassinations and bombings of residential areas.
  2. Infrastructure Destruction: Key public services such as hospitals, water supply, and power stations have been severely damaged.
  3. Widespread Looting: There have been numerous reports of looting, including the seizure of homes and banks.
  4. Attacks on Religious Sites: Religious places, including churches and mosques, have not been spared from violence.

Ambassador Taha underscored that this is not merely a dispute between armed factions but a serious act of aggression against the Sudanese people, with support from foreign nations.

International Support for the RSF

Reports have surfaced regarding the United Arab Emirates’ military and logistical support to the RSF. The Ambassador stated:

“The Sudanese government has submitted official documents and evidence to the United Nations Security Council showing that the UAE has provided financial and military support to these rebel forces.”

He mentioned that these claims have been supported by investigations from various UN committees and reputable media outlets, reinforcing the credibility of Sudan’s assertions.

Strengthening Sudan-Iran Relations

With the recent normalization of diplomatic relations between Iran and Sudan, the Ambassador discussed the steps taken to enhance cooperation:

  • Historical Ties: Sudan and Iran share a long-standing friendship and have resumed diplomatic relations after a hiatus.
  • Mutual Commitment: Both nations have expressed commitment to collaborate in political, economic, and humanitarian fields.
  • Recent Developments: Despite the ongoing conflict, positive steps have been taken to enhance diplomatic and economic ties.

Ambassador Taha emphasized that any military assistance from Iran has not been feasible given the ongoing conflict since 2023.

Geopolitical Implications

Sudan’s strategic location along the Red Sea raises significant questions about the role of regional and global powers in the conflict. Ambassador Taha remarked:

“Sudan will not allow its national sovereignty to be a tool for foreign agendas.”

He reiterated that Sudan remains committed to maintaining control over its territorial waters and ensuring maritime security in collaboration with other coastal states.

In summary, the situation in Sudan is a complex interplay of internal conflict, external support for rebel forces, and the geopolitical implications of its strategic location. The international community’s response will be crucial in shaping the future of this troubled nation.
